Chapter 2 - The Malicious Report

Three days after returning home, a knock sounded at my door. I opened it to find a woman with a lanyard: Child Protective Services.
“Ms. Sarah Carter? We received an urgent report alleging emotional instability, post-surgical medical neglect, and child endangerment,” she stated coldly.
My heart hammered, but I kept my composure. Vanessa and my mother had called CPS, claiming I was mentally unfit after surgery and keeping Lily in an unsafe environment.
I invited the caseworker inside. The apartment was spotless, stocked with healthy food, and filled with Lily’s toys. I handed her my discharge papers, medical clearings, and a written statement from Rachel confirming Lily’s well-being.
“My family is retaliating because I cut off financial support and established legal boundaries,” I explained, providing audio recordings of Vanessa’s hospital outburst.

The caseworker’s cold expression softened. “This report is clearly malicious. I will mark this case as unsubstantiated immediately.”
When the caseworker left, I called my lawyer, Arthur Vance. “They played their dirtiest card, Arthur. It’s time we hit back.”
