Chapter 1 - FEDERAL JURISDICTION

The red warning banner flashing across Marissa Keane’s laptop screen lit up the dark London hotel room in an eerie crimson glow.

PROTECTED WORKSPACE BREACH DETECTED. REMOTE RESPONSE ACTIVATED.

Across the Atlantic, three thousand miles away in the quiet, tree-lined upscale neighborhood of Arlington, Virginia, Paige stood frozen in the middle of Marissa’s hallway. The iron fireplace poker was still held loosely in her right hand, her knuckles white, her breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps.

The heavy, polished hardwood door to Marissa’s home office had barely a scratch on its reinforced steel frame, but the digital keypad was shattered—and that single act of destruction had just set off a chain reaction Paige was completely unequipped to comprehend.

The apartment’s ambient lighting died instantly, plunging the 4,000-square-foot luxury penthouse into darkness. A second later, every screen—from the 85-inch OLED display in the living room to the smart fridges and embedded wall tablets—flashed to life with blinding brightness.

High-definition video played in a loop across every surface.

It showed Paige entering the door using the expired one-time service code. It zoomed in on the flashing digital disclaimer she had dismissed with a flick of her thumb: ONE-TIME SERVICE ACCESS. ENTRY RECORDED. NO RESIDENCY RIGHTS GRANTED.

It broadcasted her smug smile directly into the camera lens, capturing the exact second she sneered, "We live here now."

And then, audio from her phone call echoed through the penthouse's high-end surround-sound speakers: "Good. Once you've been there a few weeks, Marissa won't have the heart to throw the children out."

Paige dropped the fireplace poker. It clattered loudly against the marble floor, the sharp sound bouncing off the high ceilings. Her nine-year-old son, Leo, scrambled backward on the couch, pulling his little sister, Mia, behind him.

"Mommy..." Leo whimpered, his eyes wide with fear as he stared at the wall screens displaying his mother's recorded voice. "Is Aunt Marissa coming?"

"Shut up, Leo!" Paige snapped, her voice high and panicked. She pulled out her phone, her thumb trembling violently as she dialed her mother’s number. "Mom! Something’s wrong with Marissa’s apartment! The TVs turned on by themselves, and—"

Before she could finish the sentence, the private express elevator at the end of the foyer chimed.

The doors slid open with a smooth, mechanical hiss.

Four figures stepped out. They weren't building security guards in navy blazers, nor were they local beat cops casually checking on a noise complaint.

They wore full tactical gear—black body armor, helmets, sidearms holstered at their hips, and gold badges pinned to heavy chest plates that caught the glare of the flashing screens. Across the back of their tactical jackets, giant yellow block letters read: U.S. MARSHALS.

Behind them stood three uniformed officers from the Arlington County Police Department, their hands resting cautiously on their belts.

Paige shrank back against the hallway wall, clutching her phone to her chest. "W-what is this? Who called you? This is a private residence! My sister owns this place!"

The lead operative, Senior Deputy Marshal Marcus Vance—a towering man with a graying beard and cold, piercing eyes—stepped forward. He held a high-powered tactical flashlight in one hand, sweeping the beam across the room until it rested squarely on Paige’s terrified face.

"Paige Miller?" Vance’s voice boomed through the space, flat and completely devoid of warmth.

"Yes! I'm Marissa's sister!" Paige blurted out, her tone shifting instantly into an artificial laugh. "There’s been a huge misunderstanding! I have permission to be here. My sister let us in. I just accidentally touched her office door, and the alarm went off—"

"Ma'am, keep your hands where we can see them," Vance interrupted, taking two deliberate steps toward her. "This property is a designated secondary secure site registered under the United States Marshals Service Federal Protective Detail. You are currently standing inside a high-clearance zone containing classified judicial documents and federal surveillance network access."

Paige blinked, her jaw dropping open. "What? No... no, you're mistaken. Marissa works in an office! She does paperwork for the court!"

"Deputy Marshal Marissa Keane is currently leading an active international fugitive recovery task force," Vance replied, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his tactical belt. "And you just attempted a forced entry into a restricted federal workspace using a deadly weapon."

"Deadly weapon?!" Paige screamed, her voice cracking as she gestured wildly toward the fireplace tool on the floor. "It’s a poker! I was just trying to get into the spare room!"

"Mom!" her mother’s frantic voice shrieked through the speaker of Paige’s phone, which was still connected on speakerphone. "Paige, what’s happening?! Put those policemen on the phone right now! Tell them who you are!"

Deputy Vance didn't even glance at the phone. He reached out, grabbed Paige’s wrist with a grip like a vice, and spun her around against the wall.

"Paige Miller, you are under arrest for federal burglary, destruction of government property, and unauthorized access to a protected federal facility," Vance recited calmly, snapping the steel cuffs tightly around her wrists.

"You can't arrest me!" Paige shrieked, kicking her heels against the floor as the cold metal bit into her skin. "This is my sister's house! Marissa! Call Marissa right now! She won't let you do this to me!"

"Deputy Marshal Keane was the one who authorized the tactical breach from London ten minutes ago," Vance said near her ear. "She personally ordered your removal."

Paige froze. The color drained completely from her face, leaving her skin a ghastly, translucent white.

"She... she did what?" Paige whispered.

"Take her down," Vance commanded the two county officers behind him. "And call Child Protective Services for the kids until their father or a non-involved guardian can be located."

"No! Not my kids! You can't take my kids!" Paige screamed as she was pulled toward the elevator, her heels dragging across the polished marble floor. "Mom! Call Dad! Call the lawyer! Marissa betrayed us!"

In her London hotel room, watching the crystal-clear feed through her encrypted tablet, Marissa took a long, quiet sip of room-service espresso.

She watched her sister get pushed into the elevator in handcuffs. She watched the police gently wrap her terrified nephew and niece in blankets while calling a designated family liaison officer.

Marissa didn't feel rage. She didn't feel regret. She felt an absolute, crystal-clear stillness—the kind of stillness that comes when a long-overdue storm finally breaks.

Her phone began to ring. The caller ID flashed with her mother’s name: CAROL KEANE.

Marissa answered, placing the phone calmly against her ear.

"Marissa!" her mother screamed into the line, her voice trembling with pure hysteria and fury. "What did you do?! The police just dragged your sister out of your apartment in handcuffs! They have Leo and Mia in a squad car! Are you insane?! Undo this right now!"

Marissa stood up, walking over to the window of her hotel room, looking out at the rain-slicked streets of London beneath the faint morning light.

"Hello, Mom," Marissa said softly, her voice smooth as silk and cold as ice. "I told Paige to leave my home. She didn't listen."

"She’s your sister!" Carol shrieked. "She has nowhere else to go! You have a four-bedroom penthouse that you barely use! You're selfish! You've always been selfish! I am telling you as your mother, you call those police officers right now and tell them it was all a mistake, or so help me God—"

"Mom," Marissa cut her off, her tone so sharp it seemed to slice through the frantic shouting across the Atlantic. "Listen to me very carefully. For fifteen years, you and Dad treated my hard work as a family fund. You took my money, you demanded my property, and you convinced Paige that she was entitled to everything I built."

"We raised you!" Carol yelled.

"And now," Marissa continued smoothly, ignoring the interruption, "your daughter is facing federal felony charges. If you or Dad step one foot onto my property, I will have the Marshals arrest both of you for conspiracy."

"You wouldn't dare—"

"Try me," Marissa said softly.

She hung up the phone, tapped her tablet screen, and blocked her mother’s number permanently. Then she drafted a short, precise message to her lead prosecutor in Washington, D.C.

File the full charges. No deals. No bail agreements without my explicit written consent. It's time to clean house.
