Chapter 7 - THE GRAND JURY INDICTMENT

Two weeks later, the final reckoning arrived in Courtroom 402 of the United States District Court in Alexandria.
The courtroom was filled to capacity. Sitting at the defense table were Arthur, Carol, Paige, and Greg, all wearing orange federal inmate jumpsuits. The months of confinement had stripped away their arrogance, leaving them looking gray, beaten, and terrified.
AUSA Sterling stood before the judge, presenting the final plea agreement and indictment summary.
"Your Honor," Sterling announced, "the defendants have agreed to enter guilty pleas to all counts of conspiracy, grand larceny, wire fraud, and attempted destruction of federal property."
Judge Helen Brooks, a stern veteran federal judge known for her zero-tolerance stance on financial abuse and intimidation, looked down at the defendants over her reading glasses.
"Before I accept these pleas," Judge Brooks said, her voice echoing through the silent courtroom, "I want to hear from the victim. Deputy Marshal Keane, you may address the court."
Marissa stood up at the prosecution table. She wore her full dress U.S. Marshals uniform, gold badges gleaming, her posture straight and proud. She walked to the podium, her voice clear, calm, and resonant.
"Your Honor," Marissa began, looking directly at the four people sitting in orange jumpsuits. "For my entire adult life, I believed that loving my family meant accepting their abuse. I believed that every dollar I earned, every success I achieved, was something I was obligated to sacrifice to satisfy their endless entitlement."
Carol began weeping quietly, but Marissa didn't stop.
"They didn't break into my home because they were desperate," Marissa continued firmly. "They broke into my home because they truly believed that my life belonged to them. They used my name, stole my savings, and terrorized my home. They showed no remorse until they were caught by federal agents."
Marissa turned toward Judge Brooks. "I ask this court to impose the maximum sentence allowed by law. Not out of vengeance—but because boundaries without consequences are just suggestions. They need to learn that my life is mine alone."
Judge Brooks nodded slowly. She adjusted her papers and brought down her hand with absolute authority.
"The court accepts the guilty pleas," Judge Brooks declared.
"Sentencing is as follows: Arthur Keane, for masterminding grand larceny, wire fraud, and international financial theft, you are sentenced to TWELVE YEARS in federal prison."
Arthur slumped forward, burying his face in his hands.
"Carol Keane, for active conspiracy and wire fraud, you are sentenced to SIX YEARS in federal prison."
Carol let out a loud, agonized sob.
"Paige Miller, for felony burglary and destruction of federal property, you are sentenced to EIGHT YEARS in federal prison."
Paige shrieked, collapsing against her lawyer’s shoulder.
"Gregory Miller, for co-conspiracy, you are sentenced to FOUR YEARS in federal prison."
Judge Brooks slammed her gavel down with a sharp, definitive bang: BANG!
"Court is adjourned."

As federal marshals stepped forward to lead the sobbing family away to begin their prison sentences, Paige looked at Marissa one last time, her eyes filled with desperate tears. "Marissa... please... what about my kids?!"
Marissa stood tall, looking her sister dead in the eyes. "Leo and Mia are safe, Paige. I’ve made sure of it. But you will never use them as human shields ever again."
