Chapter 5 - THE CORRUPT LEGAL COUNSEL

The office of Finch & Associates Legal Services sat in a dingy brick strip mall on the outskirts of Richmond.

Harold Finch, a greasy fifty-year-old attorney with thinning hair and a cheap suit, was frantically throwing paper files into a heavy-duty shredder when the glass front door shattered inward.

"Federal search warrant! Don't move!"

FBI agents and Deputy Marshals poured into the reception area, guns raised, securing the room in seconds. Special Agent Sarah Jenkins walked straight into Finch’s inner office, holding a signed federal search-and-seizure warrant.

Finch dropped a stack of papers, raising his trembling hands. "Wait! This is protected by attorney-client privilege! You can't raid my office!"

"Attorney-client privilege doesn't protect communications made in furtherance of an ongoing crime, Mr. Finch," Agent Jenkins replied, slapping a set of handcuffs onto his wrists. "It’s called the crime-fraud exception. Look it up."

Within hours, federal agents had seized Finch’s hard drives, financial ledgers, and secret safes.

In a stark interrogation room at the FBI Field Office, Finch sat sweating under the harsh halogen lights, facing AUSA Sterling and Deputy Vance.

"Harold," Sterling said, leaning across the metal table. "We have the emails where you instructed Paige Miller on how to bypass security codes. We have the wire transfers showing Arthur Keane paid you twenty thousand dollars from Marissa Keane's stolen trust account."

Finch swallowed hard, his throat dry. "I... I was just providing legal advice on tenant rights..."

"You advised a client to use physical violence to breach a federal security clearance zone," Vance corrected him coldly. "That makes you a co-conspirator to a federal felony. You're looking at fifteen years in federal penitentiary, Harold. Say goodbye to your law license, your home, and your pension."

Finch broke instantly. He buried his head in his hands, trembling violently.

"It wasn't my idea!" Finch stammered, eager to sell out his co-conspirators to save his own skin. "Arthur Keane came to me! He said his daughter was earning hundreds of thousands of dollars and hiding it from the family! He said she owed them for everything she had! He asked me how to force her to hand over the penthouse title!"

"And what did you tell him?" Sterling asked, recording every word.

"I told him if they got inside and changed the locks, Virginia’s backlogged eviction courts would take at least two years to throw them out!" Finch confessed frantically. "I told him we could use the delay to file a civil suit claiming Marissa held the title in constructive trust for the family! It was all Arthur! He planned the whole thing!"

Sterling closed his notepad with a decisive snap. "Thank you, Harold. Your full confession has been recorded. You just traded fifteen years for ten—if you testify against Arthur and Carol in court."
