Chapter 4 - THE SMEAR CAMPAIGN BACKFIRES
Desperate to turn public opinion in their favor before the formal grand jury indictment, Carol Keane made a catastrophic mistake.
On Wednesday morning, local news station Channel 4 broke an 'exclusive story' pushed directly by Carol and her attorney.
The segment featured Carol sitting on a floral sofa, wiping tears from her eyes, holding a framed photograph of Marissa from her college graduation.
"My daughter Marissa has turned her back on her blood," Carol wept into the camera. "She works a cushy government job in London while her poor sister, her brother-in-law, and two innocent young children are left homeless on the streets. She had her own sister arrested by armed federal agents just for seeking shelter from a harsh winter!"
The news anchor added dramatic narration: "A local mother speaks out against her daughter—a high-ranking federal employee—who used SWAT-style tactics to evict two young children in the dead of night..."
The segment blew up on social media within hours. Online mobs began tweeting outrage, demanding that the Marshals Service investigate Marissa Keane for corruption and abuse of power.
Sitting in her London office, Marissa received a call from Director Thomas of the U.S. Marshals Service.
"Marissa, have you seen the news?" Director Thomas asked, his voice gravelly.
"I have, Director," Marissa replied calmly. "My mother is trying to weaponize public sympathy to force me to drop the felony charges."
"The Director's office is taking heat from congressmen who saw the segment," Thomas said. "Can we shut this down cleanly?"
"Director," Marissa said, opening her laptop. "I don't just have a defense. I have absolute clearance to destroy their narrative completely. I request permission to release the full, unredacted security logs and financial audit files to the press."
"Permission granted," Thomas snapped. "Make it definitive."
Two hours later, Marissa’s legal team held a press conference on the steps of the federal courthouse in Alexandria. AUSA Sterling stepped up to the microphones, flanked by Deputy Vance and FBI Special Agent Jenkins.
"In response to recent false allegations broadcast by local media," Sterling began smoothly, "the United States Department of Justice is releasing the authenticated audio, video, and financial records pertaining to the arrest of Paige Miller."
Sterling pressed a button on a podium laptop.
A massive LED screen behind him lit up, playing the raw footage in crisp 4K resolution.
The media watched in stunned silence as Paige smashed the security keypad with a fireplace tool. They listened to the pristine audio of Carol telling Paige: "Once you've been there a few weeks, Marissa won't have the heart to throw the children out."
Then, Sterling pulled up the financial audit slides.
"Furthermore," Sterling announced into the microphones, "federal grand jury indictments have been returned against Arthur Keane, Carol Keane, and attorney Harold Finch for grand larceny, wire fraud, and conspiracy. Over $140,000 was systematically stolen from Deputy Keane’s trust accounts over three years to fund luxury personal lifestyle expenses."
The reporters gasped. Camera flashes exploded in a blinding frenzy.
"The narrative that Paige Miller was a helpless homeless mother seeking shelter is a fabricated lie," Sterling concluded firmly. "This was an organized, criminal attempt to seize high-security federal property through force and fraud. The Department of Justice will prosecute every individual involved to the absolute fullest extent of the law."

The same social media users who had condemned Marissa were now lambasting Carol and Paige as 'the most toxic family in America.' The local news station issued a formal retraction and apology live on air, while legal commentators openly marveled at the sheer stupidity of trying to pull a squatter scam on a Deputy U.S. Marshal.
