Chapter 9 - BREAKING THE CHAINS

With her family serving their federal prison sentences and her finances fully restored, Marissa turned her attention to the most important task of all: protecting the innocent children who had been dragged into their parents' web of greed.
Through a family court proceeding, Marissa ensured that nine-year-old Leo and six-year-old Mia were placed under the legal guardianship of Greg’s elder sister, Sarah Miller—a kind, stable schoolteacher who lived in a quiet town in Maryland, far away from the toxic dynamics of the Keane family.
Marissa personally funded the creation of a fully protected irrevocable trust that covered the children's healthcare, private schooling, and future college tuition.
On a warm Saturday afternoon, Marissa visited Sarah’s house in Maryland.
Leo and Mia were running around the sunlit backyard, playing fetch with a friendly golden retriever. They looked healthy, happy, and completely free of the terror and tension that had shadowed their lives months earlier.
Leo ran up to Marissa, throwing his arms around her waist. "Aunt Marissa! Look! Sarah bought me a new bicycle!"
Marissa knelt down, wrapping her arms tightly around her nephew, holding him close. "It’s a beautiful bike, Leo. Are you having fun?"
"Yeah!" Leo beamed. "And we don't have to pack our bags anymore! Sarah said we get to stay here forever!"
Marissa felt a warm wave of peace wash over her chest. She smoothed his hair and kissed his forehead. "You never have to pack your bags again, buddy. You're safe now."
Sarah Miller walked over, handing Marissa a cup of fresh lemonade. "They’re sleeping through the night now, Marissa. No more nightmares about security alarms or shouting."
"Thank you, Sarah," Marissa said softly. "For giving them a real home."
"You made this possible, Marissa," Sarah replied gently. "You broke the cycle. You stopped the toxic entitlement before it could ruin another generation."

Marissa stood up, looking out over the green yard where the children were laughing in the sunshine.
She pulled out her phone, opened her contact settings, and permanently deleted every remaining old family group chat, email thread, and social media link. The chains of her past were officially broken—forever.
