Chapter 1 - The Escalation

The scalding pain radiating down my thighs felt like fire biting into raw skin, but the cold realization in my heart burned far worse. I looked at Jake. His eyes weren't filled with concern for his wife of three days; they were cold, calculated, and demanding. Beside him, Linda smoothed her blouse, her smug posture making it clear that she considered the blistering stew on my legs nothing more than a minor inconvenience to her pride.

"Apologize, Sarah," Jake repeated, stepping closer, his voice dropping into a stern command. "You made my mother drop her dish. Look at the mess you caused."

I didn't utter a word. I simply looked at him, seeing the man I had married clearly for the very first time. Without saying a word, I turned away, ignoring the stinging agony in my legs, and walked steadily toward my private home office.

"Where do you think you're going?" Linda sneered behind me. "You haven't cleaned up this floor yet!"

I ignored her, stepped into my office, and locked the heavy oak door behind me. I opened the bottom desk drawer, unlocked the small metallic safe inside, and pulled out the thick Manila envelope. Inside rested two crucial documents: the original, sole title deed to the apartment registered under my maiden name, and a legally binding, ironclad prenuptial agreement signed and notarized by Jake himself two weeks before our wedding—a document he had foolishly signed without reading carefully, assuming I was too naive to protect myself.

When I opened the office door and walked back into the living room, Jake was standing by the couch with his hands on his hips. "Are you ready to be reasonable now?" he demanded.

I held up the papers. "This apartment is legally mine. Under the terms of the prenuptial agreement you signed, marriage grants you zero claim to my real estate, my bank accounts, or my earnings. Furthermore, clause eight states that any domestic disturbance or illegal entry by family members constitutes an immediate breach of cohabitation privileges."

Linda’s smirk evaporated. "What is she talking about, Jake?"

Jake’s face drained of color as the reality sank in. He had assumed that once the ring was on my finger, my assets automatically became shared property.

"You have five minutes to leave," I said, my voice steady and deadly calm. "Both of you. If you are still here in six minutes, I am calling the police to report illegal entry, domestic assault, and trespassing."
