Chapter 9 - Healing and Restitution

Three months later, the annulment of our marriage was finalized on the grounds of fraud and non-disclosure. Legally, it was as if the marriage had never happened.

With the legal battles behind me, I used the financial restitution awarded from the civil suit against Linda to establish a special fund at the local women's shelter, helping victims of domestic abuse and financial control gain legal independence.

My physical burns healed, leaving only faint silver lines that served not as marks of shame, but as reminders of my strength.

One Saturday morning, I stood in my kitchen once again. The morning sun streamed bright and clear through the floor-to-ceiling windows, casting golden light across the hardwood floor. There were no unpacked boxes, no wilted flowers, and no looming shadows of toxic family members.

The front lock chimed softly.

I looked up without fear. It was my long-time friend and colleague, Dr. Maya Lin, holding two cups of fresh coffee and a basket of warm pastries. She used the new access code I had personally handed to her.

"Good morning, Sarah," Maya smiled, putting the coffee on the counter. "How does freedom taste today?"

I took a sip of the warm coffee, feeling the peaceful quiet of my apartment wrap around me like a warm blanket.

"It tastes like home," I replied softly.
