Chapter 3 - Uncovering the Deceit

The following morning, I visited a clinic to document my burns officially. The doctor noted second-degree burns across my thighs, issuing an official medical report and photograph evidence. With the medical report safely secured in my legal file, I called my attorney, Eleanor Vance.
"Eleanor," I said as soon as she picked up. "It happened sooner than expected. They tried to take over the property today."
"Did you use the document?" Eleanor asked smoothly.
"I showed them the prenup and changed the lock codes," I replied. "But I need you to run a deeper background check on Jake's family business, Reynolds Logistics. Something isn't adding up."
By mid-afternoon, Eleanor called back with staggering news. Jake hadn't just married me out of a desire for control; he was facing catastrophic financial ruin. Reynolds Logistics was drowning in nearly eight hundred thousand dollars of debt, and his mother’s lavish lifestyle was being funded entirely on high-interest commercial loans. Jake had planned to use my mortgage-free apartment as collateral for a massive debt consolidation loan.
"He was planning to trick you into signing co-ownership documents under the guise of routine tax filings next month," Eleanor explained. "If you had signed them, you would have been on the hook for his family's bankruptcy."
My stomach turned. The quiet, loving man I thought I knew was nothing more than a desperate con artist operating under his mother's instruction.
Later that evening, my phone rang relentlessly. It was Jake, followed by messages from Linda alternate numbers.

“Sarah, open the door. We need to talk like adults.” “You’re ruining our family over a misunderstanding!”
I didn't reply. Instead, I sent a formal legal cease-and-desist notice directly to Jake's email, attached with the medical burn report.
