Chapter 6 - The Trap

The night before the emergency hearing, Jake attempted one last desperate play. I received a text from his phone, but the tone was entirely different—frightened and apologetic.
“Sarah, please. I’m at the apartment building garage. I just want to return your father’s old watch that I took by mistake on our wedding day. I promise I’ll leave right after.”
My father's watch was the last tangible item I had left of him. My heart dropped when I realized Jake had taken it from my jewelry box before being kicked out.
Knowing better than to go alone, I immediately called the building's head security officer, Marcus, and asked him to accompany me to the basement parking garage with the main security monitor recording.
When the elevator doors opened at the basement level, Jake was standing near the concrete pillar, looking disheveled.
"Sarah," he said, stepping forward. "Thank God you came."
"Hand over the watch, Jake," I said, staying ten feet back with Marcus standing right beside me.
Jake looked at Marcus with annoyance. "Can we speak privately for two minutes? Just husband and wife?"
"We have nothing private left to discuss," I said. "Where is the watch?"
Jake pulled a velvet box from his jacket pocket, but instead of handing it over, he smiled sinisterly. "You think you're so smart with your prenups and your secret documents. My mom was right about you—you're cold, calculating, and ungrateful. You owe everything you have to the chance I gave you!"
"Hand over the watch, or Marcus calls the police department right now for theft of personal heirlooms," I stated without flinching.
Realizing he had lost all leverage and that his intimidation attempt had failed completely under the watchful eye of the guard and garage cameras, Jake tossed the velvet box onto the hood of my car in frustration.

"See you in court tomorrow, Sarah," he spat out. "You're going to regret destroying our family."
"You destroyed it the moment you let your mother burn me," I replied, holding the watch safely in my hand.
