Chapter 22 - Echoes in the Dark
The investigation had to be off the books. Elena couldn't trust her own department until she found the mole. At home, she forced herself to smile, watching Liam paint his wooden birdhouse a bright, chaotic blue. Her husband, David, noticed the tension in her shoulders. He didn't ask questions about the job; he simply brought her coffee and sat beside her on the porch.
"The scars are itching again?" David asked softly, rubbing her wrist where the old silver marks remained from her captivity three years ago.
"Just a ghost pain," Elena lied, leaning into his warmth. "Nothing I can't handle."
The next day, Marcus found the first real lead. The digital signature used to bypass the archive security belonged to a terminal assigned to the late Director Thomas—Elena’s former mentor who had died during the initial raid on the docks.
"Thomas is dead, Marcus. Someone is using his ghost credentials," Elena argued as they met in a crowded coffee shop downtown, blending into the morning rush.

"It gets worse," Marcus said, sliding a tablet across the table. "Two former associates of your uncle’s syndicate were released on a legal technicality yesterday morning. The judge who signed the release? Judge Raymond Vance. Your cousin’s old lawyer."
Elena realized the snake hadn't been decapitated; it had simply grown a new head. The remnants of her family's empire were consolidating under a new, anonymous leader who knew exactly how the federal system operated.
