Chapter 25 - Going Underground

Elena didn't wait for the formal arrest warrant. Knowing the layout of the federal building better than anyone, she used a fire drill distraction she triggered herself to slip past the Internal Affairs guards. She bypassed the elevators, taking the maintenance stairs to the loading dock, and vanished into the Seattle rain.

She couldn't go home. Going home would put David and Liam in the crosshairs. Instead, she used a payphone to call David from a safe distance.

"David, listen to me carefully," she whispered, her voice cracking for the first time. "Take Liam. Go to the cabin in Olympic National Park. Don't use your phones. Don't use credit cards. Use the cash in the false bottom of the safe. Now."

"Elena, what’s happening?" David’s voice was laced with panic.

"The past isn't dead, David. I have to finish this. I love you." She hung up before the call could be traced.

She sought refuge in the only place the feds wouldn't look—the derelict shipping yards once owned by her family. There, in an old crane control tower, she set up a temporary command post with stolen equipment, determined to find Marcus and clear her name.
