Chapter 30 - The True Home

The sun was setting once again over the western mountains, painting the sky in identical hues of gold, crimson, and deep lavender that had blessed the Puget Sound weeks ago.
Elena walked out of the federal building for the absolute last time. She wore no badge, carried no government weapon, and carried no heavy secrets. She was simply Elena.
She drove out to the cabin in Olympic National Park where the air smelled of cedar and damp earth. As her car pulled up the gravel driveway, the front door flew open. Liam ran down the porch steps, his blue-painted birdhouse now proudly mounted on a post near the garden.
"Mommy's home!" he screamed, throwing his small arms around her waist.
David stepped out onto the porch, a look of profound relief and quiet joy on his face. He walked down to meet her, his eyes taking in the relaxed posture of her shoulders, the peaceful clarity in her eyes.
He took her hand, his fingers tracing the old silver scars on her wrist. This time, there was no ghost pain. There was no shadow on the horizon.
"Is it over?" David asked softly.

Elena looked at her son chasing a butterfly in the grass, then up at the golden light filtering through the massive pine trees. She smiled, a deep, unbreakable sense of peace settling into her soul.
"It's completely over," Elena whispered, leaning up to kiss him. "Let's go inside. I'm finally home for good."
