With Victoria Alvarez neutralized and Marcus as her star witness, Elena didn't run from Internal Affairs this time. She waited at the scene for the sirens to arrive.
Agent Carter arrived with twenty armed officers, but the narrative had completely changed. Marcus had managed to retrieve a secondary backup drive from Victoria’s pocket before the police arrived—a drive containing the encrypted logs of the true mole within Internal Affairs who had helped frame Elena. It was Carter’s own deputy.
The political fallout was massive. Over the next two weeks, a massive purge cleared the department of corruption. Elena was not only reinstated but offered the promotion to regional Director.

She sat in her office once more, her shoulder patched up under her crisp linen shirt. The gold letters on her door were being replaced with a new title, but she looked at the empty desk and realized her heart wasn't in it anymore. The system would always have another shadow to fight, but she had fulfilled her promise to her city.
She signed her resignation papers with the same gold pen.
