Chapter 2 - The Lion's Den

Elena woke to the soft hum of central heating and the scent of fresh lavender. She blinked, realizing she was lying in a massive king-sized bed draped in silk sheets of cream and gold. The room was vast, furnished with antique mahogany wardrobe closets, a stone fireplace where logs crackled softly, and a large bay window overlooking a manicured garden shrouded in morning fog.

For a moment, she panicked, thinking she was back in her stepmother’s house, but then she saw her reflection in the vanity mirror. The torn silver dress was gone, replaced by an oversized, incredibly soft cashmere sweater and black leggings. On the bedside table sat a tray with hot tea, fresh fruit, and a small, sterile first-aid kit containing antiseptic wipes and bandages.

Beside the tray was a note written in elegant, sharp cursive: “The house physician has treated your feet while you slept. Rest. When you are ready, my housekeeper, Mrs. Gable, will guide you to the study. — M.C.”

Elena gingerly touched her cheek. The swelling had gone down, thanks to a soothing ointment someone had applied. She stood up, testing her feet; they were neatly bandaged, the throbbing pain reduced to a dull ache. She quickly washed her face in the attached marble bathroom, brushed her tangled hair, and stepped out into the hallway.

The Carranza Manor was breathtaking, a blend of old-world European elegance and modern, state-of-the-art security. As she walked down the grand winding staircase, Mrs. Gable, a kind-faced woman in her late fifties, greeted her with a warm smile.

“Good morning, Miss Vargas. Mr. Carranza is waiting for you in the library. Follow me, please.”

Elena followed the housekeeper through a labyrinth of high-ceilinged corridors until they reached a pair of heavy double doors. Mrs. Gable knocked once and opened them, revealing a room lined with thousands of leather-bound books. At the far end, behind a massive desk of dark oak, sat Matthew Carranza.

He looked different in the daylight. His dark hair was brushed back, exposing a sharp, aristocratic jawline and cold, piercing grey eyes. He wore a simple, tailored grey shirt with the sleeves rolled up, revealing muscular forearms.

“Sit, Elena,” he said, not looking up from a tablet he was reviewing.

She sat in the leather chair opposite him, feeling suddenly very small in her borrowed clothes. “Thank you for saving me last night. And for... all of this.”

Matthew set the tablet down and folded his hands. “Do not thank me yet. I am a businessman, Elena. Last night, I acted on instinct. Today, I act on strategy. I have spent the morning researching your family’s financial situation. Your stepmother’s company is a hollow shell. She has embezzled millions from your late father’s estate, and she has been using Vargas Global to launder money for some highly unsavory individuals—including Arthur Ambrose.”

Elena gasped. “Laundering money? My father would never—”

“Your father is dead, and Isabel has spent the last five years destroying his legacy,” Matthew said coldly. “But here is the crux of the matter: your father’s will states that if you die, or are declared mentally unfit before your twenty-fifth birthday, the entire trust fund reverts to Isabel. That is why she tried to force you to Ambrose. If you resisted, she had a backup plan—a private sanitarium in Switzerland where you would be kept heavily medicated while she took control of your fortune.”

A cold dread washed over Elena. She had always known her stepmother was cruel, but this was monstrous. “So I have nowhere to go. If I go to the police, she’ll use her lawyers to spin this as a rebellious stepdaughter making false accusations.”

“Exactly,” Matthew agreed. “Which is why you need a protector. Someone whose power, wealth, and legal team dwarf Isabel Vargas’s entire network.”

Elena looked at him, her heart pounding. “And why would you do that for me? What do you want, Matthew?”

Matthew leaned forward, his gaze locking onto hers with an intensity that made her breath catch. “I want to destroy Arthur Ambrose. He has been a thorn in my shipping operations for years, using illegal back-channels to undercut my contracts. If I protect you, I gain access to the Vargas Global financial ledgers—ledgers that you, as the rightful heir, have the legal right to demand. With those files, I can ruin Ambrose, and in doing so, I will hand you your inheritance on a silver platter.”

“And what do I have to do?” Elena asked, her voice barely a whisper.

Matthew’s lips curved into a faint, ruthless smile. “You have to become my fiancée. We will announce our engagement to the media tomorrow. It will place you under my direct protection, and it will publicly humiliate your stepmother and Ambrose, rendering them powerless to touch you without declaring war on the Carranza empire.”
