Chapter 8 - The Shadow of Revenge

But peace is often a fragile glass, easily shattered by those who have nothing left to lose.

While Isabel Vargas languished in a federal holding cell, Arthur Ambrose had used his immense wealth and corrupt connections to secure a temporary release on a highly contested, multi-million-dollar bail. He was a desperate animal, stripped of his companies, his reputation, and his freedom. He knew he was going to prison for life; his only goal now was revenge.

It was the night before Elena's twenty-fifth birthday.

The Carranza estate was highly secure, but Ambrose didn't plan to attack the fortress. He knew Matthew’s weakness now.

Elena had gone into the city to meet with her father’s former lawyers to finalize the transition of Vargas Global. She was accompanied by Leo, Matthew’s most trusted driver and bodyguard.

As they drove down the city streets, a heavy-duty delivery truck suddenly blew through a red light, slamming violently into the side of the luxury sedan.

The impact was deafening. The sedan spun out of control, crashing into a concrete barrier.

Inside the car, Elena groaned, her vision swimming with black spots. She looked over at Leo; he was slumped over the steering wheel, unconscious, blood dripping from a wound on his forehead.

Before she could react, the door of the passenger side was ripped open.

A man in a ski mask grabbed her, pulling her out of the wreckage. Elena struggled, kicking and screaming, but her body was weak from the crash. She was thrown into the back of a waiting van.

As the doors slammed shut and the van sped away, a familiar, raspy voice sounded from the shadows of the vehicle.

“Did you really think it would be that easy, Miss Vargas?”

Elena blinked through the darkness. Sitting opposite her, his face twisted in a mask of pure, unadulterated hatred, was Arthur Ambrose. He held a syringe in his hand, the liquid inside clear and lethal.

“Matthew Carranza ruined my life,” Ambrose hissed, leaning forward. “And now, I am going to take away the only thing he cares about. By the time he finds you, you'll just be another tragic statistic—a wealthy heiress who succumbed to an accidental overdose the night before her inheritance.”

Elena’s heart froze. She was trapped again. But this time, she wasn't the helpless girl running in the rain. She was a woman who had learned how to fight.
