Chapter 6 - The Trap Snaps

The air in the study turned freezing cold. Elena felt her breath catch, her hand instinctively tightening around the leather ledger.
Matthew didn’t flinch. He stepped in front of Elena, shielding her body with his own. His posture was completely relaxed, yet there was a coiled tension in his muscles that suggested a predator ready to strike.
“Isabel,” Matthew said, his voice flat and conversational. “You’re home early from your dinner. I assume the food was as dry as your financial assets.”
Isabel’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second before hardening into a sneer. “Do you think you’re clever, Matthew? Entering my home, stealing my property? This is armed burglary. My guards are well within their rights to shoot intruders to protect my life and estate.”
“Your property?” Elena cried out from behind Matthew, her anger overcoming her fear. “This is my father’s ledger! These are the records of how you stole from his company and helped Arthur Ambrose smuggle illegal cargo through our ports!”
“Quiet, you ungrateful little brat!” Isabel snapped, her eyes flashing with manic rage. “Your father was a weak fool who didn’t know how to use power. I built this family’s wealth! You are nothing but a parasite waiting to steal what is mine on your birthday. Well, you won't live to see that day.”
Isabel nodded to the guards. “Kill them both. We’ll dump the bodies in the river and claim they broke in to extort me. The police will believe whatever I pay them to believe.”
The guards raised their weapons.
Elena closed her eyes, bracing for the worst—but instead of gunfire, the sound of glass shattering echoed from the hallway.
Suddenly, smoke grenades erupted through the door, filling the study with thick, blinding white fog. The guards began coughing, their aim wavering.
Matthew moved with terrifying speed. In a blur of motion, he disarmed the guard closest to him, striking him in the throat and sweeping his legs. The man went down with a heavy thud. Before the second guard could react, Matthew threw a heavy crystal decanter from the desk, striking him squarely in the forehead.
“Leo, now!” Matthew shouted into his earpiece.
From the window, two of Matthew’s tactical security team rappelled into the room, quickly subduing the third guard and pinning Isabel to the wall.
Isabel screamed, her expensive dress tearing as she struggled against the zip-ties. “Release me! You can't do this! I am Isabel Vargas!”
Matthew walked over to her, his face a mask of absolute, terrifying calm. He picked up the silver USB drive Elena had dropped during the scuffle and held it up to the light.
“You were Isabel Vargas,” Matthew corrected her softly. “As of five minutes ago, my team uploaded the decrypted contents of your server—which we accessed using the hardware key your driver graciously copied for us last week—to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. By the time the local police arrive, they won't be under your payroll. They will be accompanied by federal agents.”

Isabel’s face went completely white. She looked at Elena, her eyes begging, but Elena turned away, clutching the physical ledger to her chest.
“It's over, Isabel,” Elena said, her voice shaking but resolute. “You can't hurt me anymore.”
