Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

Matthew Carranza stood in the wreckage of the crash site, his face a terrifying mask of pure fury. Leo was being loaded into an ambulance, semi-conscious but stable.
Matthew’s hands were clenched into white-knuckled fists. The air around him was so cold his security team didn't dare approach him.
His phone rang. He answered it instantly.
“Carranza,” Arthur Ambrose’s voice sneered through the speaker. “I believe you have something of mine—my reputation, my money. And I have something of yours.”
“If you touch her, Ambrose,” Matthew said, his voice dropping to a whisper that was deadlier than a scream, “there is no corner of this earth where you can hide from me. I will tear your world apart brick by brick.”
Ambrose laughed, a wet, manic sound. “You won't have the chance. Meet me at the old shipyard warehouse—dock 14. Alone. If I see a single cop, or any of your security goons, I inject her with enough heroin to stop a horse’s heart. You have twenty minutes.”
The line went dead.
Matthew turned to his head of security, his eyes blazing. “Get the helicopter. We have fifteen minutes to bypass the city traffic. And get me a tracker on Ambrose’s burner phone. I don’t care about the laws. Locate them now.”
Meanwhile, at Dock 14, Elena was tied to a wooden chair in the damp, freezing warehouse. The scent of salt water and rotting wood filled the air. Ambrose paced in front of her, playing with the syringe.
“Your boyfriend is fast, but not fast enough,” Ambrose mocked. “He’ll arrive just in time to watch you die.”
Elena looked around the dark warehouse, searching for any advantage. Her hands were tied tightly behind her back, but she felt a rusted nail protruding from the wooden leg of the chair. Slowly, agonizingly, she began rubbing the thick rope against the sharp metal edge.
“You’re a coward, Arthur,” Elena said, trying to keep him talking to buy time. “You hide behind your money and your thugs. Even now, you’re terrified of Matthew.”
Ambrose’s face twisted in rage. He stepped forward and slapped her, the impact rattling her teeth. “Shut up! I am not afraid of him! He’s a soft boy who fell for a pretty face!”
Elena ignored the pain. The rope was fraying. One more strand...
Snap.
Her hands were free. She kept them behind her back, waiting for the perfect moment.
Suddenly, the heavy metal doors of the warehouse were blown off their hinges with a deafening explosion.
Matthew Carranza stepped through the smoke, a silhouette of vengeance. He didn't have a weapon in his hand, but his presence alone was suffocating.
Ambrose panicked, grabbing Elena by the hair and pulling her up, pressing the needle of the syringe against her neck. “Stay back, Carranza! One step and she dies!”
Matthew stopped, his eyes locking onto Elena’s. In that split second, a silent communication passed between them.
“Ambrose,” Matthew said, taking a slow, deliberate step forward. “This is between you and me. Let her go, and I will give you my personal jet. You can fly to a country with no extradition. You can live. But if you inject her, I will kill you myself, slowly.”
Ambrose hesitated, his greed warring with his desire for revenge. “The jet... and ten million in untraceable crypto. Now!”
As Ambrose turned his head slightly to demand the transfer, Elena struck.
With all her remaining strength, she slammed her heel down onto Ambrose’s foot, driving her elbow hard into his ribs.
Ambrose gasped, losing his grip.
Matthew lunged forward like a striking cobra. He seized Ambrose’s wrist, twisting it until the bone snapped with a sickening crack. The syringe fell to the floor, shattering.
Matthew threw Ambrose to the ground, his fist raining down on the older man with a brutal, relentless fury until Ambrose lay unconscious, his face a bloody mess.
Matthew gasped for air, his hands covered in blood. He turned to Elena, his eyes wide with a rare, raw vulnerability.
“Elena...”
She threw herself into his arms, sobbing with relief. He held her so tightly she could barely breathe, burying his face in her hair.

“I’m here,” she whispered. “I’m safe. You saved me again.”
“No,” Matthew muttered, kissing her temple, his body shaking. “You saved yourself. But I am never letting you out of my sight again.”
