Chapter 4 - Whispers in the Dark

Back at the Carranza estate, the high of their public victory quickly gave way to the cold reality of their arrangement. Elena sat on the plush sofa in Matthew's private study, sipping chamomile tea. The adrenaline was fading, leaving her bone-tired but strangely wired.

Matthew was standing by the fireplace, unbuttoning his collar. The ruthless billionaire who had just dominated a ballroom now looked human, his shoulders slightly tense.

“You played your part well tonight,” Matthew said, his eyes reflecting the amber glow of the fire.

“It wasn't entirely an act,” Elena admitted, looking down at her hands. “Seeing Isabel look that terrified... I’ve waited ten years for that. But Matthew, Ambrose won't just let this go. He’s a dangerous man. He has ties to the dock unions and smuggler networks. He’ll fight back.”

Matthew walked over and sat on the edge of the low coffee table in front of her, bringing himself to her eye level. The proximity was intoxicating. “Let him try. I have spent a decade building an empire that cannot be shaken by the likes of Arthur Ambrose. But you... you need to be prepared for the mud they will fling. Isabel will try to paint you as an unstable, gold-digging girl who seduced me.”

“I don’t care what they say about me,” Elena said, looking directly into his grey eyes. “I only care about stopping them. I want my father’s company back. I want to clean his name.”

Matthew studied her face. His hand rose, his fingers hovering over her cheek before gently brushing a stray lock of hair behind her ear. His touch was incredibly warm, contrasting with his cold demeanor. “You have more fire in you than I expected, Elena Vargas.”

“You don't survive Isabel Vargas without learning how to burn,” she whispered.

A heavy silence settled between them, charged with an unspoken tension that had nothing to do with contracts or shipping lanes. For a second, Elena thought Matthew was going to lean in. Her heart raced, her breath catching in her throat.

But Matthew suddenly stood up, pulling back into his professional shell. “We begin the audit of Vargas Global tomorrow. I have hired a team of forensic accountants. You will need to sign authorization forms as the primary heir. Get some rest, Elena. The real war starts tomorrow.”

Elena nodded, feeling a strange pang of disappointment as she watched him walk away. She was safe, yes, but she was starting to realize that the greatest danger to her heart might be the very man who had rescued her.
