Chapter 3 - The Public Defiance

The grand ballroom of the Grand Plaza Hotel was filled with the glitterati of high society. Chandelier light danced off diamond necklaces and champagne flutes. Cameras flashed incessantly as reporters jockeyed for positions.

This was the annual Autumn Gala, an event Isabel Vargas had spent months preparing for. She stood near the entrance, dressed in a stunning emerald gown, smiling tightly as she accepted compliments. But beneath her calm facade, she was sweating. Elena had been missing for thirty-six hours. Arthur Ambrose was furious, threatening to pull his funding if the girl wasn't found.

Suddenly, the whispers in the ballroom died down. The heavy double doors swung open.

A collective gasp rippled through the crowd.

Walking into the room, hand-in-hand, were Matthew Carranza and Elena Vargas.

Elena looked breathtaking. She wore a midnight-blue silk gown that clung to her curves, her dark hair styled in elegant waves that partially hid the fading bruise on her jaw. Beside her, Matthew was the epitome of dark, dangerous sophistication in a custom-tailored black tuxedo. He held her hand firmly, his thumb gently stroking the back of her knuckles in a reassuring gesture that felt surprisingly warm.

Isabel’s face drained of all color. She dropped her champagne glass, the crystal shattering on the marble floor.

Within seconds, Isabel and a bloated, angry-looking Arthur Ambrose intercepted them, blocking their path.

“Elena!” Isabel hissed, her voice trembling with a mixture of rage and panic. “What is the meaning of this? You ran away, you worried us half to death! And what are you doing with Mr. Carranza?”

Matthew stepped slightly in front of Elena, his towering frame casting a shadow over Isabel. “Mrs. Vargas. I believe you should address my fiancée with more respect.”

The word fiancée echoed through the immediate crowd like a gunshot. Reporters scrambled forward, their microphones thrust toward the couple.

“Mr. Carranza! Are you announcing an engagement?” a reporter shouted.

“Indeed,” Matthew said, his voice smooth and clear, carrying across the silent ballroom. “Elena and I have been privately courting for some time. After the unfortunate... accident she suffered at your estate two nights ago, where she tripped and injured her face, I decided it was time to bring her into my home permanently. We are to be married before the end of the month.”

Arthur Ambrose stepped forward, his fists clenched, his face purple. “This is absurd! Carranza, you can’t just walk in here and claim—”

“I can do whatever I please, Arthur,” Matthew interrupted, his eyes turning to ice as they locked onto the older man. “And if you have an issue with my personal life, I suggest you take it up with my legal department. Though, I suspect you have more pressing matters to attend to—such as the federal audit of your northern shipping manifests that began an hour ago.”

Ambrose froze, his eyes widening in terror.

Elena looked at her stepmother. For the first time in her life, she saw fear in Isabel’s eyes. The woman who had terrorized her for a decade was suddenly powerless, shrinking under the weight of Matthew Carranza’s absolute authority.

“We’ll be taking our leave now,” Matthew said softly, turning to Elena with a look of tenderness so convincing it made her heart flutter. “Shall we, darling?”

“Of course, Matthew,” Elena replied, her voice steady and proud. As they turned and walked out of the gala, the cameras flashing like a storm around them, Elena realized she was no longer the prey.

With Matthew by her side, she was becoming the hunter.
