Chapter 5 - The Stolen Files

The next three weeks were a whirlwind of legal battles and financial digging. Elena worked closely with Matthew’s legal team, analyzing old family documents and signing countless petitions. The public war of words had begun; Isabel had released a statement claiming Elena was mentally fragile and being manipulated by Matthew for financial gain.

But Matthew’s PR team crushed the narrative instantly, releasing medical reports of the bruises Elena had sustained the night she escaped, subtly implying Isabel’s abuse without legally defaming her. Public sympathy swung heavily to Elena.

However, they hit a major roadblock.

“We need the physical ledger,” Matthew explained one evening, spreading a map of the Vargas estate on his desk. “The digital files we intercepted are encrypted with a rotating hardware key. The physical key—a modified USB drive—and the original paper ledger detailing the money laundering transactions are kept in a floor safe in Isabel’s private study at the mansion.”

Elena stared at the map. Her childhood home, a place of nightmares. “I know where the safe is. It’s hidden beneath the Persian rug under her desk. The passcode is my mother’s death anniversary—Isabel used it as a sick joke to remind herself of when she gained full control.”

“I’ll send a team,” Matthew said.

“No,” Elena insisted, stepping forward. “The mansion is heavily guarded, but there’s a security blind spot by the old greenhouse. I used to sneak out through there when I was a teenager. Your team won't know how to navigate the interior without triggering the silent pressure sensors in the hallway. I have to go.”

Matthew frowned, his jaw tightening. “Absolutely not. It is too dangerous. If Isabel catches you—”

“She won't,” Elena countered, her eyes flashing with determination. “She’s scheduled to attend a charity dinner in the city tomorrow night. Ambrose will be with her. The house will be nearly empty, staffed only by a skeleton security crew. I can get in, get the ledger, and get out in ten minutes. Matthew, this is my father's legacy. Let me do this.”

Matthew stared at her, his expression unreadable. For a long moment, the silence stretched. Finally, he let out a harsh sigh. “If you go, I go with you.”

“Matthew, you're too recognizable—”

“I am not letting you walk into that house alone, Elena,” he said, his voice leaving no room for argument. “We go together. Leo will handle the security feed overrides. We go in, get the files, and leave. Understood?”

Elena felt a surge of warmth in her chest. Despite his cold demeanor, Matthew was fiercely protective. “Understood.”

The following night, shrouded in black tactical gear, Elena and Matthew slipped through the rusted gates of the old Vargas greenhouse. The rain was light tonight, a gentle mist that masked their movements.

They moved like shadows. Elena led the way through the dusty, glass-paned structure, unlocking a creaking wooden door that led into the servants' quarters. Matthew followed closely, his hand resting near the holster of a concealed firearm beneath his jacket.

They reached Isabel’s study without incident. The room smelled of stale perfume and expensive brandy—the scents of Elena’s childhood terrors.

Elena knelt beneath the massive mahogany desk, rolling back the heavy Persian rug to reveal the steel safe dial. Her fingers trembled as she spun the numbers: 0-4-1-2.

With a soft click, the safe door swung open.

Inside lay a thick, leather-bound book and a small silver USB drive. Elena grabbed them, her heart hammering against her ribs. “I got them. Matthew, I have them.”

“Good. Now we move,” Matthew whispered, grabbing her hand and pulling her up.

But as they turned toward the door, the overhead lights flickered and snapped on, bathing the room in a harsh, blinding glare.

Standing in the doorway, a cruel smile stretching across her face, was Isabel Vargas. Behind her stood three large, armed security guards.

“Going so soon, dearest?” Isabel purred. “And you brought Mr. Carranza. How convenient. I can rid myself of both of my problems in one night.”
