Chapter 7 - The Calm After the Storm

The aftermath of the raid on the Vargas mansion was a media sensation. Isabel Vargas and Arthur Ambrose were arrested in a coordinated federal sweep. The charges were staggering: money laundering, human trafficking, racketeering, and conspiracy to commit murder. The evidence in the ledger and the USB drive was ironclad.
With the villains behind bars awaiting trial, a quiet peace finally settled over the Carranza estate.
Elena sat on the terrace, watching the sunset paint the sky in shades of bruised purple and brilliant gold. For the first time in her life, she felt light. The heavy shadow of her stepmother was gone. In less than a week, she would turn twenty-five and inherit her father's full estate, allowing her to rebuild Vargas Global into the honest company her father had always wanted.
A soft footstep sounded behind her. She didn't need to turn to know it was Matthew.
He joined her at the stone railing, holding two glasses of white wine. He handed one to her, his fingers brushing hers.
“To your freedom, Elena,” Matthew said, raising his glass.
She clinked her glass against his. “To my freedom. And to you. I wouldn't have survived without you, Matthew.”
Matthew looked out over the gardens. “You would have survived. You are stronger than you think. I merely provided the leverage. The courage was entirely yours.”
Elena took a sip of wine, her heart beginning to beat with a different kind of nervousness. Now that the danger was gone, the elephant in the room was their contract. They were legally engaged in the eyes of the public, but the arrangement was supposed to end once Isabel was defeated.
“So,” Elena began softly, keeping her eyes on the horizon. “What happens now? The trial is starting, Isabel is ruined, and my birthday is next week. Our... contract is technically fulfilled.”
Matthew was silent for a long moment. The cool evening breeze ruffled his dark hair. “Is that what you want, Elena? For the contract to end?”
Elena turned to look at him. His eyes were dark, searching her face with an intensity that made her breath hitch.
“I don't know,” she confessed, her voice barely a whisper. “This engagement started as a lie to save my life. But... I don't think my feelings for you are a lie, Matthew.”
Matthew’s jaw tightened. He set his wineglass down on the railing and stepped closer, closing the distance between them. The cold, untouchable billionaire seemed to melt away, leaving only a man who looked at her as if she were the only thing that mattered in the world.
“I have spent my entire life controlling everything around me, Elena,” Matthew said, his voice deep and thick with emotion. “I don't invite chaos. But the night you climbed into my car, soaked in rain and terrified, you ruined all my plans. And I have never been happier to lose control.”
He reached out, his hand cupping her cheek, his thumb gently tracing the faint, almost invisible mark where Isabel had struck her weeks ago.

“I don't want to end the contract,” Matthew whispered, his eyes dropping to her lips. “I want to make it real.”
Elena didn't answer with words. She leaned up, wrapping her arms around his neck, and pulled him down into a kiss. It was passionate, desperate, and filled with the promise of a future they had both fought so hard to secure.
