Chapter 1 - The Breaking of the CageThe sharp, metallic clinking of the key turning in the lock echoed through the freezing Montana air like a gunshot. The heavy steel door of the kennel swung open, groaning against its frosted hinges. Snow spiraled into the enclosure, dusting the concrete floor where Elena Cross lay curled on her side, her knees drawn up toward her swollen, seven-month belly to protect her unborn child.

The massive black guard dog—a Belgian Malinois named Titan—stood up slowly. He didn't bark at Adrian Voss. Instead, the animal lowered his head in a posture of wary respect, sniffing the hem of Adrian’s dark wool coat before stepping aside to allow him room.

Adrian didn't wait. He stepped directly into the cage.

He didn't care about the mud, the frost, or the indignity of kneeling on concrete in a bespoke Italian suit. He dropped down on one knee before Elena. Up close, the damage was horrifyingly clear. Her lips were blue, her fingers so stiff and pale they looked carved from marble. The thin fabric of her cotton dress was damp from the drifting snow, sticking to her trembling skin.

"Elena," Adrian said. His voice was soft, stripped entirely of the cold, lethal edge he used with men like Damon Cross. It was a low, resonant murmur meant only for her ears.

Elena raised her head slowly, her eyelashes heavy with frost. Her dark eyes, once filled with vibrant life, were dull and clouded by shock and hypothermia. She looked at the man kneeling in front of her—a man whose face she recognized from dark rumors and financial newspapers, a man who commanded empires and silenced enemies with a single word.

"Are you... real?" she whispered, her voice barely a breath.

"I am," Adrian replied. He unbuttoned his heavy lined overcoat and removed it in one fluid motion, wrapping it tightly around her frail shoulders. The coat instantly enveloped her in his warmth, smelling rich of cedarwood, leather, and fresh rain. He reached down and gently slid his hands beneath her back and knees.

"Don't move," Damon’s voice cut through the air, sharp and full of rising panic.

Adrian didn't stop. He lifted Elena cleanly off the ice floor, cradling her close against his chest. Her small, heavy belly pressed against his ribs, and for a fraction of a second, Adrian felt a faint, delicate flutter against his side—the baby moving, fighting to survive the cold. A dark, terrifying emotion flared deep in his chest, so intense it almost made him catch his breath.

"I said stop!" Damon yelled, stepping toward the kennel, his hand dropping toward his waist where his concealed sidearm sat. "She is my wife, Voss! What happens on my estate is none of your business! You came here to collect a financial debt, not to dictate my marriage!"

Adrian slowly turned around, carrying Elena in his arms. He didn't look threatened; he looked like a predator evaluating a particularly pathetic piece of prey.

The moment Damon reached for his holster, two of Adrian’s men—twins named Julian and Marcus, who moved like shadows behind him—instantly drew their suppressed pistols. Two red laser dots appeared simultaneously on Damon’s forehead and throat.

Damon froze, his hand locking over his leather holster.

"If you touch that weapon," Julian said in a pleasant, conversational tone, "your brain will be on the snow before your hand clears your jacket."

Margaret Cross, Damon’s mother, gasped from the top of the mansion steps, her face pale beneath her heavy makeup. "Damon, don't! Let them go!"

Adrian walked out of the kennel, stepping past Damon as if the man were nothing more than a pile of dirty slush on the driveway. He looked down at Elena, whose shivering had slightly subsided under his heavy coat, though her eyes were fluttering closed.

"Look at me, Elena," Adrian commanded softly. "Stay awake."

"So cold..." she murmured, her face burying into the crook of his neck.

"I know," Adrian murmured back, his fingers tightening protectively against her back. "I have you now. Nobody touches you again."

He turned his cold, storm-grey eyes back to Damon. "The debt your family owes me was thirty million dollars, Damon. You missed three payments. I came here tonight to seize your assets as collateral."

"You can't take my wife as collateral!" Damon snarled, his face flushed with embarrassment and rage as his own guards stood frozen, terrified of Adrian’s men.

"I am not taking her as collateral," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a deadly, low register that chilled the blood of everyone in the courtyard. "I am taking her because you are unfit to possess anything fragile or valuable. As of tonight, the debt is double. And if she or her child suffers a single lasting consequence from your cruelty tonight, I will tear down every stone of the Cross legacy until you have nothing left to hide behind."

With that, Adrian turned his back on the Cross estate. He walked toward his reinforced armored SUV, holding Elena tight against his heart, while Titan the guard dog trotted quietly behind them, leaving the Cross family standing helpless in the snow.
