Chapter 6 - UnmaskedThe grand ballroom of the Bellevue Hotel in downtown Helena was packed to absolute capacity. Over two hundred journalists, camera crews, and high-profile commentators filled the rows, their voices creating a deafening hum of anticipation.

Damon Cross sat in the front row, accompanied by his mother and his lawyer. He wore a crisp black suit, maintaining his stoic, worried expression for the camera crews lining the perimeter. He believed he had won. He believed Elena would be too intimidated to face the cameras, leaving Adrian Voss exposed as an international kidnapper.
At precisely ten o'clock, the side doors opened.
A hush washed over the room like a tidal wave.
Adrian Voss stepped onto the elevated stage. He looked towering and regal in a bespoke charcoal suit, moving with absolute authority. But he didn't walk to the podium alone.
Beside him, holding his arm with elegant confidence, was Elena Vance-Cross.
She wore a breathtaking, floor-length dark emerald velvet gown that gracefully contoured her seven-month pregnant figure. Her hair was styled in soft, sophisticated curls, her skin glowing with health, her posture straight and proud. She looked healthy, stunning, and completely unbothered.
Behind them, Julian placed a large metallic briefcase onto the press table.
Damon’s jaw dropped in sheer shock. His mother gasped beside him, clutching her pearls.
Adrian stepped up to the microphone, his deep voice easily filling the cavernous room without needing to raise his volume.
"Good morning," Adrian said calmly. "There have been numerous allegations made over the past twenty-four hours regarding the safety and well-being of Elena Vance-Cross. Rather than releasing a written statement through lawyers, Mrs. Vance-Cross is here to address the nation herself."
Adrian stepped back, extending a hand to Elena. She took the podium, looking out over the flashing cameras without a single flicker of fear.
"My name is Elena Vance-Cross," she began, her voice clear, melodious, and perfectly composed. "And I am here today to clear the record."
She looked directly into the camera lens, then shifted her cold gaze down to Damon sitting in the front row.
"Two weeks ago, my husband, Damon Cross, locked me inside a steel dog kennel behind our estate during a sub-zero blizzard," she stated clearly.
The room erupted into a collective gasp of shock. Camera flashes went off frantically.
"That is a lie!" Damon suddenly shouted, standing up from his chair, his face red with rage. "She's being coerced! She's suffering from trauma!"
"Sit down, Mr. Cross," Adrian’s voice cut through the noise like a lethal blade, two security guards stepping up behind Damon instantly, pushing him back into his seat.
Elena didn't lose her composure for a second. She reached down and unlocked the metallic briefcase on the table, pulling out a sleek black flash drive.
"Damon forgot one detail," Elena continued smoothly. "The dog kennel was equipped with a high-definition, motion-activated security camera connected to the estate's private cloud server—a server to which my father's estate held legal administrative access."
She plugged the drive into the podium's media hub. Behind her, a massive fifty-foot LED screen flickered to life.
High-definition video began to play.
The entire ballroom fell dead silent as the horrifying footage filled the screen: Elena, seven months pregnant, shivering violently inside the dark steel cage during the snowstorm. The audio was crystal clear—capturing Damon’s arrogant laughter from the mansion balcony, followed by his mother Margaret saying, "Let her stay out there until morning, Damon. She needs to learn her place."
The footage continued, showing the arrival of Adrian Voss, his immediate rescue of Elena, and Damon’s pathetic attempt to draw a gun before being disarmed.
Gasps of horror and outrage echoed through the room from the journalists. Several female reporters covered their mouths in disbelief.
"This is the man who claims I was kidnapped," Elena said, her voice ringing with absolute triumph as the video paused on Damon’s arrogant face. "I was not kidnapped, ladies and gentlemen. I was rescued from a monster."
She turned her eyes back to Damon, whose face was completely devoid of color, sweating profusely under the stage lights.

"As of eight o'clock this morning," Elena concluded, "I have filed for emergency divorce, full legal custody of my unborn child, and a complete asset freeze against the Cross Estate for severe spousal abuse and attempted murder."
She turned away from the podium, taking Adrian’s outstretched hand. Together, they walked off the stage as the ballroom erupted into total, chaotic uproar, journalists leaping from their seats to swarm the terrified Damon Cross.
