Chapter 4 - The War of AttritionOver the next two weeks, the war between Adrian Voss and the Cross family unfolded not with loud gunfire, but with terrifying, surgical precision.

Damon Cross woke up on a Tuesday morning to find his personal and corporate bank accounts frozen by federal court orders, citing massive tax fraud and money laundering tied to his offshore accounts. By Thursday, three of his major real estate developments were seized by state marshals due to safety violations brought forward by anonymous whistleblowers. By the following week, his suppliers refused to ship raw materials to his factories, demanding cash upfront—cash Damon no longer possessed.
Damon was being suffocated financially, pushed into a corner like a frantic rat.
Meanwhile, at Voss Manor, life transformed into a peaceful sanctuary.
Elena’s strength returned rapidly under Dr. Chen's care. Her pregnancy progressed smoothly, her bump growing rounder and healthier by the day. She spent her days reading in the estate's massive glass greenhouse, surrounded by rare tropical plants while Titan guarded her every step.
Adrian, despite managing a global corporate empire, made sure to be present for every meal. He sat across from her at the long dining table, listening intently as she spoke about her passion for art history and her dreams of opening a small restoration gallery once her baby was born.
For the first time in years, Adrian found himself smiling—genuinely smiling. The cold, ruthless titan of industry was melting away, replaced by a man deeply, irreversibly falling in love with the woman under his roof.
One evening, as a soft rain tapped against the library windows, Elena sat on the plush sofa, sketching in a notebook Adrian had gifted her. Adrian sat nearby at his desk, reviewing financial documents.
Suddenly, Elena let out a sharp gasp, dropping her charcoal pencil.
Adrian was out of his chair in a second, crossing the room with lightning speed. "Elena! What's wrong? Is it pain?"
Elena looked up at him, a wide, breathtaking smile breaking across her face. She reached out and grabbed his hand, placing his palm directly over the right side of her swollen belly.
"Feel," she whispered.
Adrian stilled. Beneath his broad, warm palm, he felt a distinct, powerful kick—a tiny foot pushing firmly against her skin. Then another.
Adrian stared at her belly in complete awe, his grey eyes widening like a child seeing magic for the first time. He had commanded armies, negotiated billion-dollar deals, and survived assassination attempts without blinking, but feeling this tiny life kick against his palm brought him to his knees.
He dropped down onto the floor beside the sofa, his hand remaining gently pressed against her belly.
"She's strong," Adrian murmured, his voice husky with emotion.
"She knows you're here," Elena said softly, her fingers weaving gently through his dark hair. "Every time you walk into the room, she starts moving. She recognizes your voice, Adrian."
Adrian looked up, his eyes meeting hers. The atmosphere between them shifted, becoming intensely intimate, charged with unspoken desire and deep tenderness.
"Elena," Adrian whispered, his hand sliding up from her belly to cup her soft cheek. "I need to tell you something."
"I know," she whispered back, leaning into his touch. "I feel it too."
"No," Adrian said gently, his expression turning serious. "You need to understand. I didn't just step in because of your father's memory. The moment I saw you in that cage, freezing, protecting your child... I realized I would burn the entire world to the ground before I let anyone hurt you again."
Elena’s eyes filled with tears, but they were tears of profound joy. She leaned down and pressed her soft lips against his forehead. "Then burn it, Adrian. I'm not afraid anymore."

Before Adrian could speak, Julian knocked rapidly on the library door and stepped inside, his expression dark.
"Boss," Julian said urgently. "We have a problem. Damon Cross has just released a public statement to the media. He's holding a press conference in two hours, accusing you of holding his pregnant wife hostage under threat of violence."
