Chapter 2 - Sanctuary in the HighlandsThe journey from the Cross estate to the secluded sanctuary of Voss Manor was eighty miles of treacherous, winding mountain roads. Inside the heated rear cabin of the armored SUV, the atmosphere was tense and frantic.

Adrian sat on the leather bench with Elena cradled in his lap. He had wrapped her in two heavy cashmere blankets, holding her against his body to share his core heat. His fingers were pressed firmly against her wrist, constantly monitoring her weak, rapid pulse.

"Drive faster, Marcus," Adrian commanded, his eyes fixed on Elena’s pale face.

"The blizzard is picking up, sir," Marcus answered from the front seat, his hands tight on the steering wheel. "Visibility is down to zero on the pass."

"I don't care about the weather," Adrian snapped, a rare edge of fury breaking through his usual stoic composure. "If her temperature drops further, we lose them both."

Beside them, Titan lay on the floorboard, resting his heavy chin on Adrian’s knee, whinnying softly whenever Elena let out a faint whimpering sigh.

Elena was drifting between consciousness and nightmares. In her mind, she was still trapped behind those cold steel bars, hearing Damon’s mocking laughter echoing from the brightly lit mansion. She remembered the day she married him—a marriage arranged by her father before his death to settle old corporate disputes. She had believed Damon was a refined, sophisticated gentleman. But behind closed doors, he was a sadist, controlled entirely by his manipulative mother, Margaret. When Elena became pregnant, Damon’s jealousy and paranoia spiraled out of control, culminating in tonight’s nightmare when she dared to question his squandering of her trust fund.

Suddenly, a warm, broad hand covered her cold face.

"Open your eyes, Elena," a deep voice commanded. It was not Damon’s cruel voice. It was deep, dark, and filled with an undeniable, comforting power.

Elena forced her eyelids open. She looked up into the striking face of Adrian Voss. Up close, his features looked as though they were sculpted by a master artist—a strong, sharp jawline, high cheekbones, and dark, piercing grey eyes that seemed to look straight into her soul.

"Who... who are you to him?" she rasped, her throat dry and raw.

"I am the man he fears," Adrian answered simply. "And right now, I am the only man who matters."

"Why did you save me?" she whispered. "He said... he said no one was coming."

Adrian’s thumb gently brushed across her cheekbone, wiping away a frozen tear. "He was wrong. Drink this."

He held a small thermos to her lips, tilting a sip of warm, sweetened tea into her mouth. She swallowed with difficulty, the warmth spreading slowly through her chest.

Thirty minutes later, the convoy pulled through a massive, wrought-iron security gate hidden deep within a thick pine forest. Nestled in the mountains stood Voss Manor—a grand, modern fortress constructed of dark stone, wood, and floor-to-ceiling bulletproof glass.

The SUV ground to a halt beneath the heated portico. Before the driver could even open the door, the vehicle was surrounded by a team of private medical personnel led by a sharp-eyed woman in scrubs.

"Mr. Voss!" Dr. Sarah Chen called out as the door opened. "We have the trauma room prepared!"

Adrian didn't wait for a gurney. He stepped out of the vehicle, still carrying Elena in his arms, and strode directly into the estate. Titan trotted loyally at his heels.

He carried her down a warm, softly lit corridor into a fully equipped, state-of-the-art medical suite built into the mansion. He laid her gently onto the heated examination bed.

Dr. Chen immediately moved in with a team of nurses, applying warm IV fluids and monitoring equipment. "Severe hypothermia," Dr. Chen noted quickly. "Blood pressure is low. We need an immediate ultrasound to check fetal distress."

Elena panicked as the medical team hovered over her, her hands flying instinctively to protect her stomach. "No! Please!"

"Elena," Adrian’s voice sliced through her panic. He stepped up to the head of the bed, pushing through the nurses, and extended his hand to her. "Look at me."

Elena grabbed his hand like a lifeline. His fingers were warm, strong, and unyielding.

"Dr. Chen is my personal physician," Adrian told her, his eyes locked onto hers with unwavering certainty. "She saved my life in Eastern Europe. She will save yours tonight. Let her work."

Elena took a ragged breath, squeezing his hand tightly as Dr. Chen applied the warm gel to her pregnant belly.

The room fell quiet, save for the rhythmic humming of the medical monitors. Then, suddenly, a rapid, swooshing sound echoed from the speaker—thump-thump-thump-thump.

Dr. Chen smiled warmly. "Strong fetal heartbeat. The baby is a fighter, Mr. Voss. She’s stable."

Elena let out a loud sob, the tears finally flowing freely down her cheeks. The relief was so overwhelming her whole body shook.

Adrian looked down at the ultrasound screen, watching the tiny, kicking silhouette of the baby. A strange, unfamiliar warmth bloomed in his chest—a feeling he had long thought buried beneath years of blood, power, and vengeance.

He squeezed Elena’s hand gently. "You're safe now, little bird," he murmured softly. "The cage is broken."
