Chapter 8 - RetributionDamon didn't hesitate. "Kill him!" he roared to his mercenaries.

Before the mercenaries could raise their weapons, the darkness surrounding the gardens exploded into action.

Julian and a dozen of Adrian’s top-tier tactical operators materialized from the shadows of the pine trees. Suppressed gunfire spat through the night air—thwip-thwip-thwip.

The six mercenaries dropped to the mud in seconds, their weapons falling uselessly into the wet grass, neutralized before they could pull a single trigger.

Damon panicked. Dropping his rifle, he pulled a concealed handgun from his jacket and bolted toward the glass patio doors, screaming insanely as he aimed at Adrian.

Adrian didn't even flinch. As Damon lunged onto the patio, Adrian stepped forward with lightning speed.

In one fluid motion, Adrian grabbed Damon’s wrist, twisting it upward with bone-crushing force. The handgun discharged uselessly into the wooden ceiling beams before dropping to the stone floor.

Adrian followed through with a devastating knee to Damon’s chest, knocking the breath completely out of him. Damon collapsed onto his hands and knees, gasping frantically for air, spitting blood onto the polished stone.

Adrian stepped over him, grabbing Damon by the back of his collar and dragging his bloodied face up toward the rain.

"Look at me," Adrian commanded, his voice dropping into a dark, demonic growl.

Damon looked up, coughing, his eyes wide with absolute, pathetic terror as he stared into Adrian’s freezing grey eyes.

"You locked a pregnant woman in a steel cage in the freezing snow," Adrian whispered, leaning down close to his ear. "You left her to die because you thought you possessed her. You thought power was about inflicting pain on the weak."

Adrian tightened his grip on Damon’s neck, lifting him slightly off the floor.

"Power," Adrian said softly, "is about deciding who gets to live and who dies. And tonight, Damon... I am deciding your fate."

"Please..." Damon sobbed, the arrogance completely gone, replaced by the pathetic weeping of a broken coward. "Please, Voss... don't kill me... I'll sign the divorce... I'll give you everything... please!"

Adrian stared at the weeping man beneath his hand. He could easily break his neck right here, right now, and no court in the world would ever convict him after tonight’s assault.

Suddenly, the heavy steel door of the underground bunker clicked open in the hallway behind the patio.

Elena stepped out onto the glass terrace, wrapped in a black woolen cloak. Titan walked beside her, his ears relaxed.

She looked at Adrian holding the trembling Damon by his neck.

Adrian turned his head slightly, meeting Elena’s gaze. The murderous rage in his eyes softened instantly as he looked at her.

"Elena," Adrian said softly. "Go back inside."

Elena walked forward, stopping a few feet away. She looked down at Damon—the man who had tormented her, abused her, and tried to destroy her life. She felt no anger anymore. She felt no fear. She felt only profound, overwhelming disgust.

"Don't stain your hands with him, Adrian," Elena said softly, her voice filled with dignity. "He isn't worth your soul."

Adrian looked from Elena’s calm face down to the weeping coward at his feet.

Slowly, Adrian released his grip. Damon dropped onto the stone floor, curling into a pathetic ball, weeping hysterically into the rain.

Two armed state marshals and federal agents—who had arrived alongside Adrian’s tactical team—stepped onto the patio, holding heavy cuffs.

"Damon Cross," the lead federal agent declared, stepping forward and pinning Damon’s arms behind his back. "You are under arrest for attempted murder, high treason, and federal racketeering. You will spend the rest of your natural life in a federal penitentiary."

As the agents dragged the weeping, screaming Damon away into the rainy night, Margaret Cross was brought out from a nearby getaway vehicle in handcuffs, weeping bitterly as her family's legacy collapsed into total ruin.

Adrian turned to Elena. He stood under the falling rain, his hands slightly trembling from the adrenaline.

Elena stepped up to him, reaching out with her soft hands to frame his rain-soaked face. She pulled his head down and kissed him—a deep, passionate, life-affirming kiss that washed away every memory of blood and vengeance.

"It's over," she whispered against his lips.

"It's over," Adrian agreed, pulling her tight against his chest as the storm finally began to clear.
