Chapter 12 - Gambling in the Shadows

A dense early morning fog blanketed the remote, wooded hills of upstate New York. "The Vault"—our secluded safehouse hidden deep within the pine forest—was reinforced like a military fortress, complete with bulletproof glass, thermal sensors, and my most loyal personal security personnel.

I stood in the control room, monitoring dozens of surveillance feeds. Inside the inner living quarters, Claire sat holding Liam tightly against her chest, her eyes distant and clouded with relentless anxiety.

"Boss, the entire defense perimeter is locked down," Victor, a former special forces operator and my most trusted gatekeeper, said as he walked in to report. "But Dominic isn't stupid. If he sent that photograph, it means he already knew this location beforehand."

"I know," I replied, my voice dropping low. "He doesn't want an immediate assassination. Dominic wants me unsettled. He wants me forced back into that filthy world to crawl before him."

The secured phone on the desk suddenly vibrated. An anonymous number.

I picked it up and switched to speakerphone.

"Adrian," Dominic’s raspy, venomous voice breathed over the line. "Enjoying your new hideout? Very safe... but you know, boss, no cage can keep an old lion hidden forever."

"I let you live once, Dominic," I growled through clenched teeth. "It was the biggest mistake of my life. This time I won't bury you under the snow. I'm going to burn you to ash."

"Ha ha ha..." A raspy, guttural laugh rattled from the receiver. "Still as arrogant as ever. But the game has changed, Adrian. You think you wiped the Syndicate's data? You think you handed everything to the FBI? Did you forget who holds the master key to the Phantom Ledger?"

My heart slammed against my ribs. The Phantom Ledger.

It was the comprehensive, highly classified record of every corrupt politician, judge, and police chief across the country that I had used to manipulate the city a decade ago. I had assumed it was completely destroyed in the warehouse fire years ago.

"If those files end up on the Federal Prosecutor's desk," Dominic whispered, "not only do you spend the rest of your life in a supermax facility, but Claire—whose name appears on several money-laundering assets from the old days—goes down right alongside you. And little Liam... he grows up in a cold state orphanage."

"What do you want?" I gritted out.

"Tomorrow night. Midnight sharp. Pier 42. Come alone. Bring the Swiss bank encryption keys you kept hidden. If I catch even the scent of a cop or a bodyguard... that picture of Liam sleeping in his crib will be the last sight you ever have of your son."

The line went dead.

Claire stepped into the room from the rear doorway, her face deathly pale. She had heard every word.

"Adrian... you can't go," she choked out, grasping my arm tightly. "It's a trap. He's going to kill you the moment he gets those keys!"

"I know," I said, meeting her gaze directly as I framed her face with my hands. "But if I don't go, he will tear our family apart from the inside. I spent my whole life playing the villain, Claire. But for you and Liam, I will become a devil one last time to burn this darkness to the ground."
