Chapter 7 - The Recovery of the Heart

Two weeks later.

The transition from the ICU to a private recovery suite in the penthouse wing of St. Gabriel’s had been smooth. The room was vast, filled with fresh flowers, soft light, and the quiet, comforting scent of lavender.

Claire sat in a comfortable, plush armchair near the window, a warm blue blanket over her lap. She was pale, but the color was slowly returning to her cheeks, and her hazel eyes were bright with a peace she hadn't known in months.

In her arms, she held Liam.

He had gained nearly a pound, his cheeks filling out, his tiny fingers grasping the soft fabric of her sweater. He was feeding well, his dark eyes wide as he looked up at his mother’s face.

I stood by the glass door, watching them. I had finally shaved, changed into a clean dark suit, and gotten a few hours of real sleep, but I still felt like an intruder in their quiet, beautiful world.

"Are you going to stand there all day, Adrian?" Claire said, her voice soft but filled with a gentle, teasing warmth.

I smiled, stepping into the room. "I didn't want to interrupt."

"You aren't interrupting," she said, shifting Liam slightly so I could see his face. "He’s been waiting for his father. He likes your voice, you know. Whenever you speak, his heart rate goes down on the monitor."

I walked over and sat on the low footstool beside her chair, my hand resting on her knee.

"Claire," I said, my voice dropping to a serious, quiet tone. "The prosecutor called this morning. Robert Reed has agreed to a plea deal. He’s going to state prison for fifteen years. Savannah is... gone. She took a flight to Paris yesterday. She won't be coming back."

Claire looked down at Liam, her fingers gently stroking his dark hair. "I don't care about them, Adrian. I don't care about the money, or the politics, or the revenge. I only care about him. And us."

She reached out, her cool hand resting on my cheek, her thumb gently rubbing the scar near my temple.

"I never stopped loving you," she whispered. "Even when you threw me out. Even when I was sleeping in that cold apartment in Brooklyn, praying that you would find the truth before it was too late."

"I was a fool, Claire," I said, my voice cracking with the memory of my own arrogance. "I let my own fear of being hurt destroy the only real thing I had. I will spend the rest of my life making it up to you."

May you like

"You don't have to make it up to me, Adrian," she said, her hazel eyes locking onto mine with an honesty that made my chest ache. "Just be here. Just be his father. That's all I need."

I leaned up, my lips meeting hers in a soft, quiet kiss that carried the promise of all our tomorrows—a promise built not on power or fear, but on the simple, unyielding rhythm of our love.
