Chapter 19 - The Verdict

Three months later.
The United States District Court in New York was packed to capacity. Journalists and news crews filled every row. It was the trial of the decade: the United States v. Adrian Vance and the dismantled syndicate network.
I sat at the defense table dressed in a tailored charcoal suit, my hands restrained. Despite facing decades in maximum security, my expression remained calm.
Claire sat in the front row of the gallery directly behind me, wearing a simple light blue dress. She looked at me with eyes full of unwavering love and strength. In her lap, she held a fresh photo of Liam smiling.
The judge knocked his gavel.
"This court has thoroughly reviewed the extraordinary circumstances of this case," the Judge stated solemnly. "The defendant, Adrian Vance, engaged in severe criminal conduct in his past. However, the defendant voluntarily surrendered the Phantom Ledger, enabling federal authorities to dismantle over fifty organized crime cells and apprehend dozens of corrupt officials."
The judge paused, adjusting his glasses as he looked down at me over the bench.
"Furthermore, the defendant's actions at Pier 42 and the Dumbo shipyard were deemed acts of lawful self-defense and defense of hostages. In light of his unprecedented cooperation and genuine repentance..."
The entire courtroom held its breath. Claire locked her fingers together in prayer.
"...This court sentences Adrian Vance to five years of supervised probation, 2,000 hours of community service, and mandatory federal monitoring. The defendant is remanded to be released immediately."
BANG!
The gavel struck the block. The courtroom erupted into a roar of cheers from defense attorneys and spectators alike.

Claire slumped back in her seat, crying tears of overwhelming relief.
I stood up as the bailiff stepped forward to unclamp the handcuffs. For the first time in my life, my hands were truly free—unburdened by iron, and unburdened by the shadows of my past.
