Chapter 20 - Away from the Lights

Six months after the trial ended.

We relocated to a quiet coastal town in Maine. No towering skyscrapers, no roaring city traffic, and no dark alleys veiled in danger.

Our new home was a seaside wooden cottage resting on a small hill overlooking the deep blue ocean.

I spent my days completing community service at a local youth shelter, teaching orphaned kids woodworking and repairing storm damage on local homes. Every evening, I returned home smelling of pine wood and salt air.

On a warm autumn afternoon, the sea breeze rustled gently through the bright red leaves of the maple trees.

Claire sat on the porch rocking chair, painting a canvas of the coastline. Liam—now walking steadily on his own two feet—was chasing a golden retriever puppy across the lawn, his clear laughter echoing through the air.

I walked up behind Claire, wrapping my arms gently around her shoulders and resting my chin on her neck.

"What are you thinking about?" Claire asked softly, turning her head to touch my cheek.

"I was thinking... that I am the luckiest man alive," I replied, kissing her softly. "I lived in hell for so many years, but you brought me home."

"We saved each other, Adrian," Claire whispered, resting her head against my chest.

Liam ran over, his small arms wrapping around my leg. "Daddy! Daddy! Look!"

He pointed toward the horizon. The sun was setting over the ocean, painting the sky and water in brilliant shades of gold, crimson, and amber.

I knelt down to lift my son into my arms, keeping my other arm wrapped securely around Claire's waist.

The storm had finally passed. The lies, the violence, and the blood of yesterday were washed away by the tide. Before us lay not the darkness of New York, but the dawn of a clean, peaceful life together.
