Chapter 6 - The Miracle of the Small

At four in the afternoon, the door to the ICU room opened with a soft click, and a nurse entered carrying a small, plastic bassinet on wheels.

"Mr. Cross," she said quietly. "The pediatrician says Liam is ready for some skin-to-skin contact. We think it might help him... and it might help her."

I stood up, my heart leaping into my throat. "Is it safe? To bring him here?"

"Yes," the nurse said, wheeling the bassinet to the side of Claire's bed. "He’s stable enough to be out of the incubator for a short time. He needs his mother’s scent, Adrian. Even in a coma, her body knows he’s here."

She gently lifted Liam from the bassinet. He was wrapped in a tiny, blue flannel blanket, a small knitted cap on his head. He let out a soft, tiny whimper as she laid him gently on Claire’s chest, right over her heart.

The nurse adjusted the wires and the tubes, ensuring both mother and child were comfortable, before stepping back with a soft smile.

I leaned over the bed, my hand resting on Claire’s shoulder, my eyes fixed on my son.

Liam shifted, his small, warm face pressing against the soft skin of Claire's neck. He let out a deep, contented sigh, his tiny hand reaching out to touch her collarbone.

And then, the heart monitor beside the bed began to shift.

The steady, mechanical beep grew slightly faster, the green line on the screen showing a new, erratic wave.

"Claire?" I whispered, my heart hammering.

Her long, dark eyelashes fluttered.

A small, quiet gasp escaped her lips, her chest rising against the weight of the ventilator. Her fingers, which had been limp in my hand for three days, suddenly twitched.

"Miles!" I shouted, not taking my eyes off her face. "Get the doctor! Now!"

Claire’s eyes slowly opened.

They were cloudy at first, dilated by the drugs and the long sleep, but as the light of the room hit them, they cleared to a warm, beautiful hazel. She looked down at her chest, where Liam lay sleeping, and then her head slowly turned toward me.

"A... Adrian?" her voice was a tiny, raspy thread, barely louder than the wind outside, but to me, it sounded like a symphony.

"I'm here, Claire," I sobbed, dropping to my knees beside her. I took her hand, pressing it to my wet cheek. "I'm right here. I've got you. You're safe."

Her fingers tightened around mine, a faint, beautiful smile touching her pale lips.

"Our... our baby?" she whispered.

May you like

"He's here," I said, pointing to the tiny bundle on her chest. "He's perfect, Claire. He's so strong. Just like his mom."

A single, beautiful tear slipped down her cheek, and as Dr. Gregory rushed into the room with his medical team, I knew that the darkness had finally lost its hold on my life.
