Chapter 1 - The Stunned Silence

The chill of the fountain water seemed to transfer instantly to every guest standing in the garden of the Royal Palms Plaza. Blake Campbell’s thumb gently brushed a bead of water from my cheek. He didn't look at the crowd; his eyes were fixed entirely on me, filled with an intense, protective warmth that contrasted sharply with his reputation as Miami’s most ruthless tycoon.

"Are you alright, my love?" Blake’s deep, resonant voice cut through the silence.

"I am now," I murmured, wrapping his warm cashmere coat tightly around my shivering frame.

My father, Richard Vance, finally found his voice, though it quivered slightly. He stepped forward, forcing a strained, awkward smile while adjusting his tie. "Mr. Campbell! What an unexpected honor! We had no idea you were coming to my daughter Penelope’s wedding. Please, excuse this minor domestic incident—my other daughter was merely being... difficult."

Blake slowly turned to face Richard. The warmth in his eyes vanished, replaced by a glacial stare that made my father instinctively take a step back.

"Difficult?" Blake asked, his voice deceptively calm. "Is that what you call assaulting my wife?"

A collective gasp echoed across the courtyard. Penelope dropped her champagne flute, sending crystal shattering against the marble tiles. My mother clutched her pearl necklace, her eyes wide with terror.

"W-wife?" Richard stammered, his face draining of all color. "That’s impossible. She’s... she has nothing!"

"She has everything," Blake declared, taking my hand and lacing his fingers through mine. "Including me. And as of five minutes ago, every bank, real estate group, and credit line connected to the Vance family name has been flagged for immediate audit and termination."
