Chapter 8 - The Final Plea

Two weeks before the trial, my mother and Penelope were allowed a brief meeting with me at Blake’s corporate headquarters. They walked into the private lounge looking gaunt, defeated, and stripped of all their former arrogance.
Penelope fell to her knees immediately, tears streaming down her face. "Sister, please! Chad’s family annulled our marriage! We have nothing left! Dad is facing ten years in prison!"
My mother held her hands together in prayer. "Please, my child. We made a terrible mistake. We are your blood. You can't let your own father rot in jail!"
I looked down at them from where I sat beside Blake. The deep, aching pain I had carried for years was completely gone, replaced by a quiet, unwavering calm.
"When I was drowning in that fountain," I said softly, "you laughed. You didn't see a daughter or a sister. You saw an object to step on to elevate yourselves."

"We were wrong! We were foolish!" Penelope sobbed.
"You aren't sorry for what you did," I replied firmly. "You're only sorry that I survived it. Justice will take its course."
