Chapter 13 - THE BATTLE LINES

"You didn't mourn your brother, Victoria," Charles replied, taking a slow step toward her. "You disputed his will for three years until the state froze his assets. And you left his children to starve in a run-down county home until you realized their existence opened a backdoor into my board of directors."

Victoria’s smile faded, replaced by an icy, sharp glare. "The law is indifferent to your moral posturing, Charles. Under New York family law, biological aunts possess primary kin priority over non-biological adopted guardians when fraud or procedural omission is alleged in the original adoption filing."

One of her attorneys stepped forward, pulling an injunction document from his briefcase. "Mr. Bennett, we have served a temporary stay on your custody rights. Pending a full evidentiary hearing in seventy-two hours, Miss Vance has been granted supervised visitation rights starting today."

From the top of the grand staircase, a small voice broke the heavy silence.

"Daddy?"

Everyone in the foyer looked up.

Lena stood at the top of the stairs, wearing her blue woolen sweater, holding her favorite plush rabbit by one ear. Behind her, holding her small hand tightly, was Evelyn. Lena looked down at Victoria with wide, terrified eyes—eyes that suddenly recognized the sharp, cold voice from long-forgotten, painful phone calls her mother had taken years ago.

"Lena, sweetie," Evelyn said softly, stepping in front of her to block her view of Victoria. "Go back into the playroom with Marcus."

"Is that woman going to take us away?" Lena asked, her voice cracking with an adult fear that should have never returned to her world. "Are we going back to the snow?"

Charles felt a sharp, agonizing stab in his chest. In three short seconds, Victoria Vance had shattered the sense of safety he had spent a year building for his daughter.

Charles turned back to Victoria, his gray eyes burning with a lethal intensity that made her high-powered attorneys take an instinctual step backward.

"Listen to me very carefully, Victoria," Charles whispered, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying growl that resonated through the marble foyer. "You will not step past that third floor tile. You will not speak another word to my child. And if you attempt to enforce this temporary injunction, I will shut down every credit line, freeze every asset, and drag your name through every federal regulatory board in North America before the sun sets today."

Victoria sneered, though her knuckles whitened against her leather handbag. "You can't buy your way out of a judge's order, Charles."

"I don't need to buy the judge, Victoria," Charles said coldly. "I own the firm that built the courthouse. Marcus, escort these people off my land."
