Chapter 18 - THE HEALING

The drive back to the Bennett estate was silent, but it was a quiet filled with profound relief.

The snow outside had begun to lighten, the harsh howling wind softening into a gentle, steady drift over the rolling hills of Albany.

Inside the SUV, Lena sat between Charles and Evelyn, her small hands holding both of theirs tightly.

"Is the lady gone forever, Daddy?" Lena asked softly, looking up at Charles’s calm face.

Charles leaned down, scooping her up into his lap, pulling her close against his chest while holding Ivy on his other arm.

"She is gone forever, Lena," Charles promised, his voice thick with a deep, emotional warmth. "No one is ever going to question where you belong again. You are a Bennett. This is your home, and nothing in this world will ever change that."

When they arrived back at the estate, Marcus opened the heavy mahogany doors, revealing the roaring fireplace, the glowing Christmas tree, and the warm, amber light reflecting off the Persian rug.

The fear that had gripped the house for three days vanished instantly.

Ivy ran toward the tree, grabbing her wooden rocking horse, while Lena walked over to the piano, sitting down on the bench. She looked back at Evelyn and Charles, a radiant, beautiful smile lighting up her small face.

"Evelyn?" Lena called out softly.

Evelyn walked over, sitting beside her on the wooden bench. "Yes, sweetie?"

"Can I play 'Silent Night' again?"

"I would love to hear it, Lena," Evelyn smiled, tears of joy sparkling in her dark eyes.

Lena’s small fingers moved over the white ivory keys, playing the gentle notes of the carol. The music filled the grand room, blending perfectly with the crackle of the hearth and the soft falling snow outside the windows.

Charles stood near the fireplace, watching them. Marcus walked up beside him, handing him a glass of warm cider.

"All federal charges against Victoria Vance have been processed, sir," Marcus reported quietly. "She will not be eligible for bail."

"Thank you, Marcus," Charles said softly. "For everything."

"It has been my honor, Mr. Bennett," Marcus smiled genuinely. "Merry Christmas."
