Chapter 6 - The Long Recovery

Three weeks passed. The winter snows began to melt, leaving behind the first soft hints of an early New York spring. Inside the Bennett mansion, a new routine had begun to take root—one born of patience, healing, and the slow, delicate construction of trust.

Ivy had been discharged from the hospital with a clean bill of health. She was currently sitting on the thick wool rug in the mansion's sunroom, surrounded by a mountain of soft plush toys, her small face completely filled with joy as she watched a mechanical train circle a track. Her breathing was deep, clear, and perfectly regular.

Lena sat at the large oak table nearby, a private tutor sitting beside her. For the first time in three months, she wasn't wearing old, faded clothes; she wore a bright yellow sweater and clean blue jeans. Yet, her eyes still darted toward the door every time a floorboard creaked downstairs.

Charles walked into the sunroom, carrying a large silver tray filled with fresh fruit, finger sandwiches, and two glasses of apple juice. Marcus followed behind him, holding a small plate of chocolate chip cookies that smelled heavenly.

"Break time, ladies," Charles announced, setting the tray down on the table.

The tutor smiled, bowing her head respectfully to Charles before packing up her books. "Lena is doing exceptionally well, Mr. Bennett. Her reading comprehension is at a sixth-grade level already. She just needs to realize she doesn't have to finish every assignment in five minutes out of fear it will be taken away."

"Thank you, Sarah," Charles said gently. "We’ll take it from here."

As the tutor left, Lena walked over to the train track, picking up Ivy and holding her on her lap. The baby instantly buried her face in Lena’s neck, letting out a soft, contented coo.

"She likes the cookies, sir," Lena said, looking up at Charles with a faint, tentative smile. "Marcus makes the best cookies in the world."

"Don't tell him that, Lena," Charles laughed, pulling up a chair and sitting down beside them. "His ego is already large enough from his days in the special forces."

Marcus offered a rare, subtle smirk from the doorway before disappearing back into the kitchen.

Charles looked at Lena, his expression turning serious but warm. "Lena, Arthur called me from the courthouse today. The grand jury just returned a full indictment against Denise Rowan on all counts. She won't be coming near you or Ivy ever again. The trial is scheduled for next month, but you won't have to testify. Our video evidence and the medical records are more than enough to secure a conviction."

Lena looked down at her sister's blond hair. "Is she going to jail?"

"Yes," Charles said firmly. "For a very long time."

Lena was silent for a long moment, her small fingers tracing the pattern on Ivy’s overalls. "When we were at her house... I used to pray every night that my dad would come back and open the door. I knew he was dead from the car crash, but I thought... maybe if I prayed hard enough, God would make a mistake and let him come back anyway."

She looked up at Charles, her blue eyes filled with an old, deep wisdom that no eight-year-old should ever possess.

"But he didn't come back," Lena whispered. "But then we found your house. Marcus told me that you didn't have any children because you were too busy building buildings. Are you still too busy, Charles?"

The question hung in the quiet sunroom, heavier than any corporate acquisition Calder had ever negotiated. Charles felt a strange, profound crack inside the frozen chambers of his own heart. He looked at Lena’s brave, waiting face, and then at Ivy, who was currently reaching her tiny hand toward his thumb.

Charles reached out, letting the infant’s small fingers wrap around his hand, while using his other arm to gently pull Lena into a side-hug against his shoulder.

"I used to think I was busy, Lena," Charles said, his voice thick with a genuine, deep emotion that had nothing to do with wealth or power. "But I realized I was just waiting. I was building an empire because I didn't know that my real job was going to be keeping two brave girls safe from the storm. I am never too busy for you two. Never again."
