Chapter 19 - A NEW CHAPTER

Six months passed.
The cold winter of Albany had surrendered to a brilliant, blooming spring. The pine trees surrounding the Bennett estate were lush and green, and the wide front lawn was covered in vibrant yellow daffodils and crimson tulips.
On the grand wooden terrace overlooking the gardens, a long table was set for a summer afternoon celebration.
Evelyn stood near the edge of the terrace, wearing a simple, elegant yellow sunshirt, watching as Lena—now seven years old—ran through the green grass holding a colorful kite that caught the warm afternoon breeze.
Ivy, now nearly three years old, ran behind her on sturdy little legs, chasing a puppy Charles had adopted for them a month ago.
Charles walked out onto the terrace, wearing a casual blue linen shirt, holding two glasses of lemonade. He walked up behind Evelyn, wrapping his arm gently around her waist, resting his chin against her shoulder as they watched their daughters laugh.
"The university approved my full-time transfer to the Albany research center today," Evelyn said softly, turning her head to look up into his clear, peaceful gray eyes. "I won't have to travel anymore."
Charles smiled—a warm, grounded expression that had completely replaced the cold corporate distance he used to carry.
"That's wonderful news, Evelyn," Charles murmured, leaning down to press a soft kiss to her lips. "Because I don't think this house works very well without you."
"Are you saying you need me, Charles Bennett?" Evelyn teased with a soft, playful smile.
"I'm saying you are the heart of this family, Evelyn," Charles answered with absolute, unwavering sincerity. "You gave me back my life. You helped me save these girls. And I want to spend the rest of my days making sure you know how much you mean to us."
He reached into his pocket, pulling out a small velvet box.
Evelyn’s breath caught in her throat.
May you like
Charles dropped down onto one knee on the sun-warmed wooden deck, holding open the box to reveal a flawless, brilliant-cut diamond ring that caught the afternoon sunlight like a blazing star.
"Evelyn," Charles said, his voice thick with deep, overwhelming emotion. "Will you do us the honor of becoming my wife, and making this home complete forever?"
