Chapter 9 - The Alliance of Love

The next two weeks were the hardest of Charles Bennett’s life. Dr. Evelyn Harper had moved into a local hotel, but she spent every afternoon at the estate, spending time with Lena and Ivy. Charles watched from a distance as she showed Lena photos of her father from their childhood, and how she naturally sang the same lullabies to Ivy that their mother used to sing.

She was an incredible aunt. She was family.

On a Friday evening, after the girls had gone to bed, Charles sat in his study with a glass of scotch, staring at a blank adoption consent form on his desk. He knew that if he fought her in court, his legal team could tie up the petition for years, but it would destroy the peace they had built. He loved Lena and Ivy too much to turn their lives into a legal battlefield.

The door to the study opened softly, and Evelyn walked in. She had changed out of her professional clothes into a comfortable sweater, her expression serious but no longer hostile.

"Charles," she said gently, using his first name for the first time. "We need to talk."

"I know," Charles said, his voice flat as he pushed the scotch glass aside. He slid the adoption paper toward her. "I’ve had my lawyers draft a co-guardianship agreement. You can have full physical custody during the school year, and I will maintain a trust fund and provide housing here during the summers. I won't fight you, Evelyn. Lena loves you, and she needs her family."

Evelyn looked at the document, then looked up at Charles’s face, seeing the deep, hollow exhaustion in his gray eyes—the look of a man who was prepared to break his own heart to save a child.

She walked over and picked up the paper, but instead of signing it, she tore it directly down the middle, dropping the pieces into his wastebasket.

Charles blinked, surprised. "Evelyn?"

"Charles, do you think I’m blind?" Evelyn said, a soft, beautiful smile touching her lips as she sat down in the chair across from him. "Over the last two weeks, I’ve watched you with them. I saw you spend three hours on Tuesday helping Lena build a papier-mâché volcano for her science project. I saw you sit on the floor for an hour letting Ivy brush your hair with a pink plastic brush. I’ve seen the way those girls look at you—like you hung the moon and the stars in the sky."

She leaned forward, her hands resting on the edge of the desk.

"I am a research scientist, Charles," Evelyn said softly. "My work takes me into remote regions of the world for months at a time. I can give them love, memories, and a blood connection, but I cannot give them the stability, the protection, and the permanent home that you have built here. And more importantly, I don't want to take their father away from them again. They already lost one."

Charles felt his breath catch in his throat, his heart slamming against his ribs. "What are you suggesting?"

"I’m suggesting an alliance," Evelyn smiled, her blue eyes bright with a profound warmth. "I want you to adopt them, Charles. I want you to be their legal father. But I want to be their permanent Aunt Evie. I want an apartment in the guest wing of this mansion so that whenever I am back from a research expedition, I am home. I want us to raise them together, as a family. Not bound by state rules or court orders, but by the fact that we both love them more than our own lives."

Charles stared at her, the immense weight of the last three months finally evaporating from his soul, replaced by a radiant, overwhelming joy. He stood up, extending his hand across the desk.

"Dr. Harper," Charles said, his voice thick with tears he could no longer suppress. "That is the best business proposal I have ever received in my entire life. Welcome to the family."
