Chapter 15 - THE STORM OUTSIDE

Night fell over Albany with brutal intensity. The snowstorm escalated into a full-scale blizzard, howling against the brick walls of the estate, bending the pine trees under the weight of thick ice.

Inside the nursery, the warm amber light of a nightlamp illuminated the small room.

Ivy lay asleep in her wooden crib, hugging a plush bear. In the twin bed beside the window, Lena tossed and turned, her forehead beaded with cold sweat.

Evelyn sat on the edge of the bed, gently stroking Lena’s soft blonde hair, whispering sweet, calming words until the little girl’s breathing stabilized.

"Is Daddy angry at us?" Lena murmured sleepily, opening her eyes slightly.

"Oh, sweetie, no," Evelyn whispered gently, leaning down to kiss her forehead. "Daddy isn't angry at you. He loves you more than anything in the entire world. He’s just making sure no one ever hurts you again."

"I don't want to go with that lady, Evelyn," Lena whispered, tears brimming in her large blue eyes. "She smells like cold medicine. She looks at us like... like we're things in a shop."

"You are never going anywhere without us, Lena," Evelyn promised, her voice filled with an absolute, fierce conviction that made the little girl breathe a sigh of relief. "Your daddy built this house for you. And we are going to stay right here, together, forever."

Downstairs in the library, Charles stood before the roaring fire, a crystal glass of scotch held loosely in his hand.

The doors opened, and Evelyn walked in, closing them softly behind her. She walked across the Persian rug, stopping right beside him. Without saying a word, she reached out and took his free hand, holding it tightly.

Charles looked down at her, the cold, rigid tension in his shoulders softening under her touch.

"She’s terrified, Charles," Evelyn said softly. "The thought of being separated from this house... it’s bringing back every ghost from that blizzard a year ago."

"I won't let them touch her, Evelyn," Charles said, his voice trembling slightly with a rare, raw vulnerability. "When I picked Ivy up this morning... when I looked into Lena's eyes... I realized that my entire life before them was empty. I built an empire of glass and steel, but those two little girls gave me a soul."

Evelyn raised her hand, gently resting her palm against his cheek. "You didn't just give them a home, Charles. You gave them a father. And tomorrow, we stand together and fight for our family."

Charles set his glass down, pulling Evelyn into his arms, burying his face in her hair as the blizzard raged outside their sanctuary.
