Chapter 5 - The Confrontation at the Mansion

The news of Denise Rowan’s arrest broke on the local evening broadcast, but the drama was far from over. While Ivy remained under observation in the pristine care of the pediatric unit, Charles had brought Lena back to his historic mansion in the west district to get her clean, fed, and settled into a temporary bedroom on the second floor.
The room was vast, featuring a canopy bed with pink silk sheets, a private bathroom with a heated marble floor, and a bookshelf filled with every children's classic ever printed. Yet, despite the luxury, Lena sat on the very edge of the bed, her small suitcase—the plastic grocery bag—placed carefully beside her feet. She looked like she was ready to run at a moment's notice.
Charles stood in the doorway, watching her with a gentle sadness. "You don't like the color, Lena? I can have Marcus change the sheets to whatever color you prefer by tonight."
"It’s beautiful, sir," Lena said softly, her eyes downcast. "But... I don't think we should get too comfortable. Denise always said that when people give you nice things, it’s because they’re planning to take something bigger away later."
Before Charles could answer, the heavy grandfather clock in the foyer downstairs began to chime five o'clock. At that exact moment, the quiet of the house was shattered by a loud, aggressive pounding on the front door, followed by a woman's screeching voice echoing through the courtyard.
"Charles Bennett! I know you have my kids in there! Open this door right now!"
Charles's expression hardened instantly. He turned to Marcus, who had appeared in the hallway behind him. "Stay with Lena. Do not let her see this."
"Understood, sir," Marcus said, slipping into the bedroom and closing the door gently behind him.
Charles walked down the grand curved staircase, his movements slow and deliberate. He opened the heavy mahogany front door to find Denise Rowan standing on his porch. She was wrapped in a designer fur coat, her hair disheveled, her face twisted in a mask of pure, vindictive rage. Behind her, a black Mercedes sat idling in the driveway, and a man in a cheap grey suit—her bail bondsman—stood near the steps.
"You think you can use your money to steal my family, Bennett?" Denise hissed, trying to push her way past him into the foyer. "I was granted legal guardianship by the state! You took them from my property without my permission! That’s kidnapping!"
Charles didn't move an inch, his large frame completely blocking the entryway. "You were bailed out quickly, Denise. I suppose eighty-five thousand dollars of a dead man's life insurance buy a very good legal defense team."
Denise froze, her eyes widening slightly before narrowing into slits. "I don't know what you’re talking about. That money was left to me to take care of those ungrateful brats. Do you have any idea what I’ve had to deal with for three months? The crying, the mess, the constant demands? I gave them a roof over their heads!"
"You threw an eight-year-old girl and a dying infant out into a sub-zero blizzard because they asked for a doctor," Charles said, his voice dropping to a register so cold it seemed to freeze the very air between them. "You locked the deadbolt, Denise. I have it on high-definition video from three different angles. I have the medical reports showing the baby nearly died of exposure. You aren't here for the kids. You’re here because you realized that without them, the state checks stop coming and the insurance money gets frozen by the probate court."
"Listen to me, you arrogant bastard," Denise snarled, stepping closer, her voice rising to a shriek. "You think you’re a saint? You’re just a lonely billionaire looking for a charity project to make yourself look good in the papers! Those kids belong to me by law! If you don't hand them over, I will drag this through the courts until you spend millions defending yourself!"
"I have four billion dollars in liquid assets, Denise," Charles said softly, a dark, terrifying smile finally appearing on his face. "I can spend ten million dollars a day on legal fees for the next year and not even notice it on my balance sheet. Can your bail bondsman say the same?"
He stepped out onto the porch, closing the front door behind him so Lena couldn't hear the destruction he was about to unleash.
"As of nine o'clock this morning, the probate court has issued an emergency freeze on all accounts associated with the Harper estate," Charles continued, walking down the steps toward her, forcing her to back up toward her car. "By five o'clock tomorrow evening, the state revenue department will begin a forensic audit of your personal taxes for the last five years. And Detective Vance has just informed my legal team that the district attorney is upgrading your charges from reckless endangerment to attempted first-degree depraved indifference murder."
Denise’s face drained of all color. She looked at her bondsman, but the man in the grey suit was already backing away toward his own vehicle, realizing he had stepped into a warzone involving a titan.
"You... you can't do this," she whispered, her voice finally cracking with fear.
May you like
"I can do whatever I want, Denise," Charles said, his gray eyes flashing with an unshakeable, ancient power. "Because unlike you, I am fighting for something that actually matters. Get off my property. The next time you see my face, it will be from across a courtroom floor, and I will be watching the jury sentence you to a place where the doors lock from the outside."
Without another word, Denise scrambled back into her Mercedes, the tires spraying gravel as she sped out of the driveway, fleeing the mansion like a ghost caught in the dawn.
