Chapter 13 - The Cold Alliance

The night passed in a tense, watchful silence. Marcus slept fitfully on the living room sofa, while Clara lay awake in her bed, staring at the ceiling, listening to the rhythmic crash of the waves outside. Every creak of the wooden cottage sounded like a footstep; every whisper of the wind sounded like a threat.
At dawn, Marcus’s phone buzzed sharply on the coffee table. He sat up instantly, answering it on the first ring.
"David," Marcus said, his voice husky with sleep. "What do you have?"
Clara emerged from her bedroom, wrapped in a woolen cardigan, watching Marcus anxiously. Marcus listened to the voice on the other end, his brow furrowing deeper with every passing second. Finally, he sighed. "Are you sure? Alright. Keep digging. Let me know the moment you find a physical address."
He hung up and looked at Clara, who was already pouring two cups of black coffee.
"What did he find?" she asked.
"The pulse oximeter was part of a decommissioned lot of medical equipment from St. Jude’s," Marcus explained, taking the mug she offered. "It was sold three months ago at a state medical surplus auction. The buyer was a shell company registered in Delaware called 'Aegis Therapeutics.' Do you recognize that name?"
Clara racked her brain, searching through the mental archives of her legal battles with Garrett and his associates. "Aegis... no. Garrett’s company was BioGen Solutions. But BioGen had several silent partners and holding companies that we could never fully trace during the trial because their assets were shielded in offshore accounts."
"Exactly," Marcus said, taking a sip of coffee. "And guess who the primary shareholder of Aegis Therapeutics is? A man named Julian Thorne."
Clara’s hand shook slightly, causing a few drops of coffee to spill onto the counter. "Thorne... the pharmaceutical tycoon. He was Garrett’s mentor. He was the one who funded the initial trials for the respiratory drug that... that they tested on Leo."
"The very same," Marcus said, his voice cold. "Thorne was never indicted during Garrett’s trial because Garrett took the fall for everything. Garrett kept his mouth shut about Thorne’s involvement in exchange for a massive offshore trust fund set up for his family. But now that Garrett’s appeal has been denied, Thorne knows his secrets aren't safe anymore. If Garrett decides to talk to get his sentence reduced, Thorne’s entire multi-billion-dollar empire will crumble."
"So Thorne is trying to silence me," Clara realized, the pieces of the puzzle falling into place. "He thinks I have proof, or he wants to intimidate me so I don't pressure the District Attorney to open a grand jury investigation into his partnership with Garrett."
"Yes," Marcus said. "He wants to keep you terrified, isolated, and silent. And if intimidation doesn't work... he will resort to more permanent measures."
Marcus stood up and walked over to Clara, taking her hands in his. "We can't just sit here and wait for him to make his next move. We need to go on the offensive. We need to find proof connecting Thorne to the threat, and we need to do it in the city."

Clara looked out at her garden, at the bright sunflowers swaying in the morning breeze. She had fought so hard to leave the city behind, to leave the noise, the greed, and the pain. But she knew Marcus was right. The only way to protect her sanctuary was to destroy the shadow that threatened to consume it.
"Alright," Clara said, her eyes flashing with a cold, brilliant determination. "Let’s go back to the city. Let’s finish this."
