Chapter 20 - The Dawn We Deserve

Three weeks later, the seaside cottage was once again bathed in the warm, golden light of the summer sun.
The sunflowers stood tall and proud, their bright yellow faces drinking in the morning heat. The ocean was a vast, glittering expanse of calm blue, the waves gently lapping against the sandy shore.
The news of Julian Thorne’s arrest and the subsequent collapse of Aegis Therapeutics had dominated the headlines for weeks. The federal government had launched a massive investigation, exposing decades of corrupt medical trials, saving countless lives, and permanently vindicating the memory of Leo Linwood.
Clara stood on the porch, holding a warm mug of tea. The heavy cardigan was gone, replaced by a light, flowing white dress. Her eyes no longer held the cold calculation of a survivor, nor the tense anxiety of a target. They held only peace.
A familiar car pulled up the gravel driveway. Marcus stepped out, wearing a simple linen shirt and jeans. He looked rested, his bruises healed, a bright, beautiful smile on his face. He walked up the steps and wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her close.
"You look beautiful, Clara," Marcus said, kissing her cheek.
"Thank you, Marcus," she replied, turning in his arms to face him. "How is the city?"
"The city is moving on," Marcus said, looking down at her with a depth of affection he no longer had to hide. "And so am I. I handed my senior partnership over to my associate yesterday. I’m moving my practice down here, to the coastal town. I think they could use a decent lawyer."
Clara’s heart swelled, a radiant, beautiful smile spreading across her face. "Is that so? And where do you plan on living?"
Marcus reached out, his hand gently cupping her cheek, his thumb tracing her jawline. "I was hoping the owner of this beautiful cottage might have room for me. If she’s ready to look forward."
Clara looked at the bronze dinosaur statue in the garden, then up at Marcus—the man who had stood by her through the darkest nights of her soul, who had fought for her, loved her, and helped her find her way back to the light.

"I am ready," Clara whispered, her voice strong, clear, and filled with an endless, beautiful hope.
She leaned in, and as their lips met in a warm, lingering kiss, the golden sun rose fully over the horizon, casting away the last of the shadows and welcoming a beautiful, endless tomorrow.
