Chapter 8 - Cleaning the Slate

In the weeks following the trial, Clara began the process of dismantling her old life. She sold the luxury suburban home—the house that had been built on stolen money and empty promises.
She donated seventy percent of the proceeds to the pediatric ICU where Ethan had spent his final days, establishing the Ethan Miller Memorial Fund to assist families who could not afford medical treatments for their children.
She kept only what she needed to start over.
One afternoon, she met Marcus at a park overlooking the city. The leaves were turning gold and red, falling gently onto the grass.
"What are you going to do now, Clara?" Marcus asked, handing her a cup of tea.
"I'm leaving the city," Clara said. "I bought a small cottage near the coast. It has a garden. Ethan always wanted to have a garden where he could search for bugs."
Marcus smiled gently. "That sounds beautiful. You deserve peace, Clara."
"And what about you?" she asked.
"I'm staying here," Marcus said. "The firm is doing well, and I've been asked to head a task force for forensic financial investigations. Vanessa’s assets were seized, but I’ve managed to rebuild my life. We survived, Clara."

"Yes," Clara whispered, looking up at the sky. "We did."
They sat in silence for a long time, watching the sunset. It was a peaceful silence, free of the anger and pain that had bound them together for the past year. They had achieved what they set out to do, and now, it was time to let go.
