Chapter 18 - The Abandoned Clinic

Just as Viktor seemed on the verge of cracking, the heavy metal doors of the warehouse swung open with a loud, screeching groan.

Julian Thorne walked in, holding an umbrella, accompanied by David.

"What is taking so long?" Thorne demanded, his voice echoing in the hollow space. "Viktor, I paid you to do a job, not to have a debate with my prisoners."

Viktor lowered the syringe, turning to face his employer. "They say you have a leak, Mr. Thorne. They say the FBI is already looking into Aegis. If that’s true, we are taking all the risk for a fraction of the reward."

Thorne laughed, a cold, mocking sound. "They are lying to save their lives! The data they cloned was encrypted. It would take a supercomputer months to crack my codes. They have nothing."

"Actually, Julian," Clara said, a serene, terrifying smile spreading across her lips. "We didn't need to crack your codes."

Thorne’s laughter died out. "What do you mean?"

"David," Clara said, looking at the private investigator who had supposedly betrayed them. "Tell him."

David slowly stepped away from Thorne, a smug smile replacing his previous look of guilt. He pulled a small, high-tech recording device from his pocket and held it up.

"I never betrayed Marcus, Mr. Thorne," David said. "I've worked with Marcus for ten years. He saved my brother from a life sentence. You thought you bought me with your offshore accounts, but I knew you'd try to verify the clone. I allowed you to 'catch' me so I could get access to your private penthouse office, plant a physical keylogger on your main terminal, and record your explicit instructions to murder Clara and Marcus."

Thorne’s face turned an ugly shade of red. He reached for his pocket, but before he could move, Clara spoke again.

"And that’s not all," Clara said, her voice ringing with the absolute power of a mother who had finally conquered her demons. "The moment we entered this facility, the GPS locator in my locket activated. We didn't just clone your files, Julian. We broadcasted this entire confrontation. The confession you just gave to Viktor? The order to murder us? It was live-streamed directly to the District Attorney's office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation."

As if on cue, the distant, rising wail of police sirens began to echo through the rainy night, growing louder and closer with every second.

Chapter1 9: The Fall of Thorne

Panic erupted in the warehouse.

"Kill them! Kill them now!" Thorne screamed, losing all his high-society composure, his face distorted with rage.

Viktor, realizing the game was entirely over and wanting no part in a capital murder charge with sirens approaching, threw the syringe to the ground, shattering the glass. "Every man for himself!" he shouted, sprinting toward the back exit along with the other guards.

Thorne lunged toward Clara, his hands reaching for her throat in a desperate, murderous frenzy.

"You ruined me!" he shrieked. "You miserable, grieving bitch—"

Before he could touch her, Marcus, using every ounce of his strength, threw his weight to the side. His heavy steel chair tipped over, crashing violently into Thorne’s legs. Thorne lost his balance, tumbling hard onto the concrete floor.

Clara, using a sharp piece of broken glass from the shattered syringe that had landed near her feet, quickly sliced through the zip-ties binding her wrists. Within seconds, she was free. She stood up, grabbed a heavy metal pipe resting against the wall, and stood over Julian Thorne.

Thorne looked up at her, his eyes filled with a sudden, overwhelming terror. The powerful, untouchable tycoon was gone; in his place was a pathetic, cowering criminal.

Clara raised the pipe, her eyes flashing with a dangerous, ancient fire. For a single, fleeting second, the urge to strike him down, to take her ultimate revenge for Leo, was almost overwhelming.

But then, she looked at Marcus, who was watching her with a look of deep, silent pleading. Don't let him turn you into a monster, Clara.

Clara closed her eyes, took a deep, shuddering breath, and lowered the pipe. She dropped it to the ground with a loud, clattering echo.

"No," Clara said, her voice filled with an unshakeable dignity. "You are not worth my peace. You will spend the rest of your life in a small, concrete box, forgotten by the world. That is your punishment."

The warehouse doors burst open. Armed federal agents flooded the room, their flashlights cutting through the darkness.

"Federal agents! Don't move!"

Thorne was quickly pinned to the ground and handcuffed, his face pressed against the wet concrete as he was dragged away, screaming curses into the night.

An EMT ran over to cut Marcus free from his chair. The moment he was free, Marcus ignored the medical staff and threw his arms around Clara, pulling her into a fierce, breathless embrace.

"You did it," Marcus whispered into her hair, his tears mixing with the rain on his face. "It's over, Clara. It's finally, truly over."

"We did it," Clara corrected softly, holding him just as tightly.
