Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Machine

By the second week after the funeral, Garrett’s architectural firm was in high spirits. They were convinced the waterfront contract was theirs. Garrett was working late almost every night, supposedly "polishing the final presentation."

Clara knew he was actually spending those nights in Vanessa’s apartment. She knew because she had hired a private investigator, not to gather divorce evidence, but to document every single meeting, every touch, and every transaction.

One evening, while Garrett was out, Clara received a call from Marcus.

"Pendelton took the bait," Marcus said. "Apex Development just submitted their bid. It’s exactly three percent lower than Garrett’s firm’s bid, and their structural plans are miraculously identical but optimized for a lower budget. The city council is going to award the contract to Apex tomorrow morning."

"Good," Clara said. "How is Garrett’s financial standing?"

"He put up his personal shares in his own firm as collateral to secure the performance bonds for this contract," Marcus explained, a grim satisfaction in his voice. "If they lose the bid, the bank will call in the bonds. He will owe over five million dollars within forty-eight hours. He’ll be completely insolvent."

The next morning, Clara sat at the dining table, sipping her tea. Garrett was dressed in his finest suit, humming to himself as he poured a cup of coffee.

"Today is the day, Clara," he said, beaming. "Once the city announces the contract, we’ll be set for life. I’m thinking we take a trip to Europe. Just the two of us. To heal."

"That sounds lovely, Garrett," Clara said.

Just then, Garrett’s phone rang. He answered it with an air of supreme confidence. "Garrett here."

Clara watched his face closely.

The color drained from his skin in a slow, horrifying wave. His eyes widened, and his hand began to tremble. "What? No... that's impossible. Apex? How could they have the exact same engineering specs? That’s proprietary! Someone leaked it!"

He listened for another moment, his breathing growing shallow and rapid. "The bond? No, wait! Give us a week. We can appeal the decision!"

He hung up, his phone slipping from his fingers and clattering onto the hardwood floor. He fell back against the kitchen counter, gasping for air.

"What's wrong, honey?" Clara asked, her voice dripping with false concern as she stood up and walked over to him.

"We lost," Garrett whispered, looking at her with hollow eyes. "Apex got the contract. They copied our designs. Clara, the bank... the bank is going to call in the collateral. Everything we own... the house, my firm shares... it's all tied to that bond."

Clara wrapped her arms around him, burying her face in his neck. To Garrett, it felt like a comforting embrace. To Clara, it was the feeling of a predator measuring its prey.

"Don't worry, Garrett," she whispered in his ear. "We still have each other. And you still have the firm's reserve funds, don't you? Surely you and Vanessa can find a way to balance the books."

Garrett went rigid in her arms. He slowly pulled back, looking at her with a mixture of terror and suspicion. "Why... why would you mention Vanessa?"

"Oh, she’s the financial director, isn’t she?" Clara asked, her expression perfectly innocent. "I just assumed she would help you find a solution."

Garrett swallowed hard, nodding slowly. "Yes. Yes, of course. Vanessa and I will... we’ll figure something out."

He rushed out of the house, not even realizing he had left his briefcase behind. Inside the briefcase was his personal tablet, logged into the firm’s internal messaging network. Clara picked it up, a dark smile playing on her lips.
