Chapter 14 - Echoes of the City

The drive back to the city was a quiet one. As the open, wild coastline gave way to concrete overpasses, towering skyscrapers, and the suffocating grey smog of metropolitan life, Clara felt a physical weight settling onto her chest.

They checked into a small, highly secure boutique hotel under assumed names, courtesy of Marcus’s legal connections. The suite was clean, sterile, and lacked any of the warmth of Clara's cottage, but it was safe.

Marcus set up a temporary war room on the dining table, spreading out physical files, financial flowcharts, and printouts of Julian Thorne’s corporate holdings.

"Julian Thorne is not like Garrett," Marcus explained, pointing to a photograph of a silver-haired, impeccably dressed man in his late fifties. Thorne had piercing blue eyes and a cruel, arrogant smile. "Garrett was sloppy, driven by greed and ego. Thorne is a psychopath of a different breed. He is calculated, deeply entrenched in the city's political and economic elite, and protected by a small army of lawyers and private security."

"How do we get to him?" Clara asked, leaning over the table.

"Thorne is hosting a massive, high-society charity gala tomorrow night at the Grand Plaza Hotel," Marcus said. "It’s a benefit for 'Children’s Medical Progress'—the ultimate irony, considering his company conducts illegal drug trials on sick children in developing nations. The entire city’s elite will be there. Politicians, judges, district attorneys. If we can get inside, we might be able to get close enough to his personal digital network to download the encryption keys for Aegis Therapeutics."

"And how do we get inside?" Clara asked. "It must be heavily guarded."

Marcus smiled, a spark of his brilliant legal sparring energy returning. "Thorne is a philanthropist who loves publicity. My firm was invited to purchase a VIP table. I have two tickets. We go as guests. But we won't just be dining, Clara. We are going to find his private server room or access his personal tablet, which he keeps with him at all times."

"I’ll do it," Clara said without hesitation.

"It’s incredibly dangerous, Clara," Marcus warned, his eyes filled with genuine concern. "If Thorne’s security catches you, they won't just ask you to leave. They will make sure you disappear."

"I've already lost my son, Marcus," Clara said softly, her voice steady and resolute. "I have survived the worst thing a human being can survive. Julian Thorne does not scare me. He should be scared of me."

Marcus looked at her, his heart swelling with admiration for her courage. "Then we prepare tonight. I’ll get you the blueprint of the Grand Plaza’s private offices, and we’ll figure out a way to get you close to him."
