Chapter 7 - The Verdict

The jury deliberated for less than four hours.

When the court reconvened, the atmosphere was thick with anticipation. Clara sat in her usual spot, Marcus beside her, holding her hand in a gesture of pure, platonic solidarity.

"In the matter of the State versus Garrett Miller and Vanessa Vance," the judge announced, "on the charges of grand larceny, wire fraud, and conspiracy..."

"Guilty on all counts."

Garrett collapsed back into his chair, weeping hysterically. Vanessa stared blankly at the ceiling, her face pale and lifeless.

The judge looked down at the defendants with deep disdain. "Your actions show a complete lack of moral character, empathy, and respect for the law. You stole from clients who trusted you, and you did so out of pure, unadulterated greed. I sentence you both to fifteen years in federal prison, with no possibility of parole."

As the bailiffs stepped forward to lead them away, Garrett turned back, screaming Clara’s name.

"Clara! Please! You can’t let them do this to me! I’m sorry! I’m so sorry!"

Clara did not look at him. She stood up, adjusted her coat, and walked out of the courtroom. The reporters swarmed her on the steps of the courthouse, flashing cameras and shouting questions.

"Mrs. Miller! How do you feel about the verdict?"

"Do you feel justice has been served for Ethan?"

Clara stopped at the top of the steps, looking out at the crowd of journalists. She took a deep, clear breath—the first real breath she had taken in months.

"Justice has been served," she said simply. "But justice does not bring my son back. I hope this serves as a reminder to anyone who thinks they can build their happiness on the pain of others: the truth always finds a way."

She walked down the steps, leaving the chaos behind.
