Chapter 2 - The Cold Street

At 7:00 AM on New Year's Day, the elevator doors of the high-rise penthouse swept open.

Grant Bennett sat at the grand mahogany dining table, nursing a cup of black coffee. Wine stains still ruined the hand-woven Persian rug where Claire had pulled the tablecloth hours earlier. Ryan sat on the leather sofa, his head in his hands, nursing a bruised foot where Claire’s heel had driven down.

"She won't call the cops," Grant said gruffly, taking a sip of coffee. "Claire is too obsessed with her corporate reputation. She’s VP of marketing at a top tech firm. A domestic scandal would ruin her career."

"I don't know, Dad," Ryan muttered nervously. "She looked... different last night. The way she pulled the table..."

"She's emotional! She's pregnant!" Diane chimed in from the kitchen, wearing a silk robe Claire had purchased for her as a Christmas gift. "Women get hysterical during pregnancy. By noon, she'll realize she has nowhere else to go and come back crawling, begging for forgiveness."

Brooke, lounging on the couch scrolling through her phone, scoffed. "She better. She was supposed to transfer my tuition and allowance money today."

Suddenly, the penthouse front doors flew open without a knock.

Four uniform officers from the Denver Police Department stepped inside, led by Detective Miller. Behind them stood two armed Sheriff's deputies and Marcus Vance.

Grant slammed his coffee cup down, standing up with an air of unearned arrogance. "What is the meaning of this? This is private property! Get out of my house!"

"Actually, Mr. Bennett," Marcus Vance stepped forward, holding a crimson folder. "This property belongs exclusively to Claire Bennett. I have an emergency court order signed by a judge at 5:00 AM, along with an immediate notice of eviction. Every single person in this room who is not Claire Bennett has fifteen minutes to clear the premises."

Ryan turned pale, jumping up from the sofa. "Marcus! What the hell is this? Where is Claire? Let me talk to my wife!"

"You will not speak to Mrs. Bennett ever again," Marcus said smoothly. "And as for you, Ryan... and you, Grant..."

Detective Miller stepped forward, unclipping his handcuffs. "Ryan Bennett and Grant Bennett, you are under arrest for felony domestic violence, aggravated assault on a pregnant person, and unlawful restraint. Hands behind your back. Now."

"What?!" Diane shrieked, dropping her coffee cup. "You can't arrest my husband! He's a respected businessman!"

"Your husband burned a pregnant woman with a lit cigarette," Detective Miller said coldly, snapping the cuffs tightly around Grant's wrists. "And your son restrained her while he did it. Save it for the judge."

"Ryan! Do something!" Brooke screamed, backing away in terror as officers cuffed her brother.

"Officers," Marcus added calmly. "All bank accounts, credit cards, and luxury vehicles associated with Claire Bennett have been frozen due to suspected grand larceny and corporate fraud. These ladies may leave with the clothes on their backs and personal items purchased prior to the marriage. Nothing else."

"You can't do this!" Grant roared as he was forcefully pulled toward the elevator. "I made this family! Claire is nothing without us! I’ll destroy her!"

May you like

"You already tried, Grant," Marcus said, watching the doors close on the cuffed patriarch. "And you failed."

Thirty minutes later, Diane and Brooke stood on the snowy sidewalk outside the luxury high-rise, carrying cheap trash bags filled with their clothes. Their luxury credit cards were declined at the corner cafe. Across the street, local news vans—tipped off by court filings—were already setting up cameras.
