Chapter 3 - The Gaslighting Campaign

By afternoon, news of the arrest had leaked across Denver's financial and tech circles. The headline was brutal: Tech VP Assaulted by In-Laws in Multi-Million Dollar Luxury Penthouse.
Sitting in a secure suite at the Ritz-Carlton paid for by her personal, unlinked legal defense fund, Claire watched the television screen. Beside her sat Sarah, her closest friend and the Chief Technology Officer at her company.
"Ryan's defense lawyer just released a press statement," Sarah said, handing Claire a tablet.
Claire read the statement aloud.
"My clients, Grant and Ryan Bennett, categorically deny these absurd allegations. Mrs. Claire Bennett has been suffering from severe pregnancy-induced psychosis and emotional distress, leading to unprovoked destructive behavior. The injuries reported were self-inflicted during a manic episode."
Claire let out a sharp, cold laugh. "Self-inflicted? He thinks he can turn this into a psychological breakdown?"
"He's desperate, Claire," Sarah said softly. "If he gets convicted of a violent felony, the financial fraud investigation turns into a federal case. They're trying to discredit you before the grand jury convenes next week."
"They forget who I am," Claire said, setting the tablet down. Her eyes burned with absolute clarity. "I don't just run marketing for a cloud security company, Sarah. I build digital forensic frameworks for a living."
Claire opened her high-performance laptop. She accessed her personal cloud server—the one Ryan didn't know existed, linked to the penthouse’s smart home system.
"When I bought that penthouse," Claire explained, typing rapidly, "I installed a secondary security network for data encryption tests. The cameras in the living room don't just record video; they record high-definition 4K audio with environmental noise cancellation."
She hit enter.
On her screen, the video from New Year's Eve loaded in crystal clarity.
The recording clearly showed Grant pressing the burning cigarette onto her sweater. It captured the horrifying hiss of the burn, Claire's gut-wrenching scream, and Ryan holding her wrists tightly, his voice booming: “Stop fighting, Claire. You embarrassed Dad. Let him teach you some respect.”
It captured Diane calmly drinking her wine, and Brooke recording audio on her phone while smiling.
Sarah covered her mouth, tears streaming down her face. "My God, Claire..."

"The defense claims I’m hysterical," Claire said, export-encrypting the video file and forwarding it directly to Detective Miller, Marcus Vance, and the District Attorney. "Let's see how a jury feels about their definition of 'psychosis'."
Within two hours, the District Attorney held an emergency press conference announcing that unbeatable audio-visual evidence had been submitted, upgrading Grant and Ryan's charges to include premeditated assault and attempted torture of an expectant mother. Bail for both men was revoked.
